The Holocaust can only be described as an extremely brutal time period in history and a particularly shameful phase for Germany. The concentration camps, were located across the nation, which further developed to death camps, violating several war laws and cold-heartedly to destroy an entire culture. The time period in history was extremely emotional and devastating. Specific prompt and topics influenced my overall knowledge and personal understanding of the Holocaust. Learning about the Holocaust, listening to surveyor testimonies, hearing about the incredible people that helped save lives and truly understood everything that took place during such a terrifying time. These courageous individuals wanted to save lives and try to make a change in a time where violence and murder was seen as the only solution. Many hid Jewish families, friends or children in their homes while others gave them new identities and papers which helped them evacuate Germany. One particular story that truly moved me was the story of Peit Adrian, a law student in the Netherlands who got together with the Amsterdam Student Group (ASG) to save Jewish children's lives and hide them from the Concentration camps. In total, ASG was able to save 350 children who were adopted by German foster families. Peit’s biography particularly reminding me that throughout a horrible time, there will aways be kind people who are willing to risk everything they have including their own lives to save others.
All things considered, the Holocaust was a time period that affects everyone differently. Personally, I found the Holocaust especially emotional. The barbarity toward a single harmless race opens your mind and disturbs your false reality of peace and innocence throughout the world. Learning about the holocaust in depth separates the good from the bad and displays the truth. There will alway be people doing horrible thing, but there is also a hand full that go out of their way to help and make the world a slightly less shameful place.
