I tore my way through the lobby- unrecognizable through the smoke and ash. I headed for the stairwell and made my way up the stairs while avoiding the hot fire.
At first I began to worry when I didn’t see her, I started to leave thinking maybe she was on a different floor, and that’s when I saw her. She was covered in ash, hidden beneath a few wooden boards that had fallen from the ceiling. As soon as I saw her I instantly wanted to know her. She was so beautiful, and I could tell that her smile could light up a room, and that her personality could instantly make anyone’s day better. Her hair was covered with soot, but I could see that underneath it was a gorgeous dirty blonde.
I quickly rushed over and gently picked her up off the ground; the movement of her chest relieved me, as I realized she was still breathing. The motion must have woken her, for her eyes fluttered open, a magnificent blue shining like the stars through the sea of yellow and orange surrounding us. I took one last step before throwing her out the doors, and almost as soon as I did so, the ceiling collapsed on top of me, and I could feel the flames tearing at my clothes and burning up my skin.
I thought I heard someone scream my name, but that was the last thing I remembered before everything went black.
My head throbbed as I opened my eyes. I had to squint through the bright light of the room, and I thought it looked like a hospital room.
Someone sat in a chair near my bed, holding me hand. My whole body was throbbing with pain as I tried to see who it was. As soon as I turned I recognized the person sitting next to me. It was her. It was the girl I had saved.
She seemed to notice me too, and for a moment our eyes met. She had the happiest look in her eyes, and a smile immediately came across her face.
“You're awake!” she said. Her expression seemed surprised, and I wondered how long I had been there.
“How long have I been here?” I asked her.
“Only a few days, but the doctors said they didn't know how long it would be before you woke up. I was so scared that I would never see you again, that I would never get to thank you for saving my life.” A single tear rolled down her right cheek, and I couldn't help but smile at
