Personal Narrative: This I Believe

“This I Believe” Essay I believe that people can change. “People change over the years, and that changes situations for good and for bad.” (Bobby Knight) When I was in middle school, my sister had a friend who did everything with her. They were the definition of best friends. The only flaw with this girl was that she had something against me and I didn’t know why. To be honest I still don't really know why we never used to get along, but that’s okay because she is one of the people who have changed the most in my life. The time that would describe our situation the best was about three years ago at a church camp we go to every year. Her mom was one of the dorm moms at the neighboring camp that we had a lot of contact with. She went to her …show more content…
If I were to be real about things I could even say that Maylana is better friends with me now than she is with my sister. We don't really ever talk about the past and all of the problems we used to have. We just understand that we are better about things now.
I was having a conversation with my mom about my friendship with her just the other day. She thinks that Maylana has done a lot of maturing over this past year and that has brought us closer together. Which is a good thing because we don’t have that big of a youth group so having someone to talk and laugh with is always a good thing.
People change for good, but as the quote states in the beginning of this paper, they also change in bad ways. I used to be best friends with a girl named Holly who also happens to go to my church. After I moved back and gained Maylana as a friend I lost Holly as one. I don't really have any reason behind this one other than my main point here, people change, and she sure did.
I believe that people change, and they don’t always have a reason. It’s one of those things in life that we have to push through, and in the end you just have to choose which path you’re going to

F is for FRIENDS. My family has always been a bigger force in my life than my friends, but my friends have certainly played a large role in making me the person I am today and in shaping how I see the world. Back in elementary school, my friendships were very context-dependent, changing year to year based on who was in my class. During the summer, my sister was my best friend, and that was totally okay. In sixth grade, my friendship landscape changed.…

In Bill Ashcroft’s Post-Colonial Transformation he describes how all individuals identify as being a part of a group with others who share the same or similar experiences. Together, they can identify as one in a world where groups are necessary to overcome challenges. This past summer I was able to experience this phenomenon that Ashcroft described when my friend and I went to Germany for two weeks and lived with Louisa Fortmann, a former foreign exchange student from the previous year. This “journey” demonstrated the varying levels of “Place,” Ashcroft’s word to describe the regions people consider home because of the shared connections. Not only was I leaving my family, the smallest group I identify with, but I was also leaving the United…
