The phone rings at 9 o'clock in the morning. “Syd coach Smith just passed… he had a heart attack last night!” exclaims Kieanna. Confused I respond, “What?” The phone goes completely silent and then tears are heard, they are Kieanna’s. Throughout my years in high school I have participated and many different activities at my school. One of the most important activities that I have been a part of is the Varsity Soccer team. As a well developed player from prior knowledge of the sport, I had always wanted to step up and be a leader the other players looked up to as an example of a great player that worked hard to get where she is. Unfortunately, the summer of 2013 my high school soccer coach died from an unexpected heart attack. Due to his absence the girls varsity soccer team was handed the short …show more content…
In lieu of letting the new players struggle with learning technical skills, I and a few other veteran team members taught the new players the fundamentals of soccer. Through weeks of training and weekend practices we all began to see growth in our new team. From this moment I knew my hard work was beginning to pay off. We endured many discouraging losses from the first few games; which turned a lot of heads in my direction. But we slowly bonded as a team and learned how to play together which showed on the scoreboard. Not only my goal, but also the team’s goal was to have winning season and exceed our expectations. The ambition we had enabled us to move our way up to fourth place in our region (within our county). At this point I knew my job was done. From the help of the other players on the team we were able to defy the obstacles set in front of us and have nearly the best record at our

It was a warm, sunny day on September 28th. Today we, Laurel High School’s soccer team, were playing against one of our biggest rivals Northwestern. Last year in our regular season, we tied against them 2-2 and lost to them in the playoffs by penalties. This year we didn’t want to lose and we were determined on winning. We arrive at their home field which was the Old Fairmont Heights High School’s soccer field since Northwestern’s field was getting turf instead of grass.…

I was born and raised in a modest wooded ranch style home on the outskirts of the rural town Neola, IA. My parents closest relatives resided two hours away in Tekamah, NE. The theme of family importance held common ground amongst my fraternal twin -Sam- and the six other siblings. Whenever the outside world would slam down its hellacious boot called life, we all had each other’s backs to rely on. Growing up, my mom and dad raised us to be humble, contributing members to the society that resided right outside our screen front door.…

We were all glad to have placed well, but were overall disappointed in losing first place by one measly point. Setting the mood for remembering our countless failures and long practices, the seniors went around the group, giving each member of the team their own little speech. When they got to me, every single senior noted how much I had changed over the season. Listening to them recount the season to me, it truly hit me how different I was compared to the beginning of the season. Senior speeches had opened a book of memories for me.…

That fear keeps coming back. Before the commencement of the school year, I had gotten myself on the JV Soccer team. I was delighted, we had been winning games and I had been playing seventy-five minutes a game as a starter. School had just commenced and we were still dominating other teams, except Marquette. They had killed us a couple days before school in a one to five loss, But after the first week of school, we had another shot at them in the Arrowhead tournament.…

When I arrived at my enormous new high school for cheerleading auditions, I got lost. It was June, and since classes had just ended, crowds of kids filled the hallways, and I got bumped around like I did not exist. Thankfully, a cheerleader saw me and figured that I had come there for tryouts since I wore shorts, cheer shoes and a big bow in my hair. She took me to the gym where at least sixty girls had shown up to compete. The first thing I saw was cheerleaders doing high level tumbling with no fear.…

In this position, I've gained confidence in leading others, especially diverse groups, while learning to be disciplined and responsible. During several matches, I've had to motivate my players when the situations were not favorable. On other occasions, keeping them calm was a challenge. In addition, I practice reciprocal trust with my teammates which has allowed for the creation of healthy relationships with mutual respect.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…
