Personal Narrative: The Irvine Delegation

Improved Essays
If you had asked any of my peers for a description of who I am, they would have said that I was someone who was shy, and possibly even a bit awkward. This was a personality trait that I had been struggling with throughout the majority of my life. I had grown up as an only child, incessantly feeling out of place among my peers. It wasn’t until the middle of my freshman year of high school that I gained the self-confidence I had only dreamed about.
In 2012, two friends and I established the Irvine Delegation in an organization called Youth and Government. This program enables students to get together and learn about the different areas of the government through hands-on experience. Out of the 12 students in our delegation, no one had any idea

This time, I was ready to prove to myself that I could be just as confident as my peers. I told myself that I would participate, even if it was only once. While listening to someone speak against my friend’s bill, I decided that it was time to speak my mind. I raised my placard high, radiating self-confidence that I didn’t completely possess. I asked a question that disproved the point the opposing speaker was making, and ultimately helped my friend’s bill pass through the senate. As I put my placard down, I couldn’t help but smile. At that moment, I was more proud of myself than I had ever been before. As I sat back down in my seat, I knew that this moment would leave a colossal impact on my character in the future. Looking back on this moment as a senior in high school, I know that this experience was a turning point in my life. I have participated in this program for the last three years and each year I have seen greater self-confidence than I saw in the last. If not for the experiences that I have had in Youth and Government, I would not be the person that I am today. Although I still have moments where I feel inadequate, I am proud to have faced my biggest fear and to have grown into both a happier and more confident

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

I am known for the "American System" and known as the "Great Compromiser," however I have accomplished and been through so much more than that. Born in 1777 in Hanover County, Virginia, I was exposed to American history since I was young. In 1797, I moved to Kentucky along with many others wanting to pursue careers in law and politics. My political career began in 1803 when I was elected to the Kentucky General Assembly then appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1806. I was Secretary of State under John Quincy Adams.…

A Thousand Experiences Throughout life, individuals face different obstacles and struggles; my obstacle was my tendency to be shy. For example, when I was faced with social pressures like speaking in front of a class for a presentation, or meeting new people, I would be a nervous wreck. My palms would sweat, my voice would tremble, and it took all the strength I could muster to overcome my irrational fears. I only had a small, albeit close knit group of friends due to my introverted ways.…

Throughout the majority of my life, I was self-conscious and constantly worried about how I was perceived by others. As a child, I had always felt slightly out of place among my peers. I was just a little too quirky to fit into any of the groups at my school and I was too shy to force my way into one. I could not exactly understand what made me so different from my classmates and I desired more than anything to gain the self-confidence to express myself.…

This week was fun for me because I made the soccer team and we had a fun week of practices. We had much less homework this week than the previous week which was very fortunate because my brother and I had their grade’s curriculum nights so I was not getting home until eight thirty. There were three quizzes/tests this week which was a little rough but I think I got through them well. I thought that the Socratic seminar in LA was a little bit of a dud because…

Our Enc1101 class partnered with the Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy to form a service learning project to educate and encourage students at Miami Dade College North Campus to take part in this year’s election. The project was named Beyond the Ballot it was planned as a “speed-dating” party so we could share intimate conversations with the students in a way to not only educate them but to also interact with each other and hear their inputs on the various issues. When I first saw an overview of the service learning project in our syllabus I felt overwhelmed and terrified, I had tremendous doubts that our class may not succeed to complete the project correctly and on time. "The most important thing I've learned is to never stop being who I am and to never be ashamed and to love myself because self-love is the best love" stated Samantha Hofmeister as she stared off into space, recollecting all the moments of her life that had to lead her to this point. Within that moment I knew that statement had opened up a whole new personality of a person that I had not got the chance to meet.
