Personal Narrative: Overcoming Adversity

There have been times in my life when I overcame adversity. This is just one example that I had to explore beyond myself to get past misfortunate times. In-between the years of 2010-2011, my mom deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan. This time frame is when I’m about 9-10 years of age. I had to learn new skills and improve upon some aspects in my life through this adverse time like becoming a better cook, leader, more academically focused and more independent. During the time that my mom was gone, I was given tasks to help around the house like for instance cooking. I began to start cooking easy meals and gradually started to improve at it. I gained new skills and strategies on how to cook, and after a while I started cooking more difficult food items. I became very good at it in a short time. I started cooking more frequently and developed a desire to cook. To this day I still cook frequently and make meals for my family. My skills I picked up during that time on cooking and the desire I had to cook had bettered me when she came back. I even took cooking classes in the summer to improve upon my cooking skills to become better a few years after she came back. I cook really good food now and I give all the credit to that misfortunate time for making me aware of the …show more content…
We were limited to only skype and it was a really inconvenient because the signal was so weak. The video quality was so blurry and the audio was so static I really couldn’t talk to her. The communication issues limited the comfort and motherly advise that she used to give me. My mom’s minimal aspect in my life during that time caused me to become more independent and become a man quicker in such a short time than most people in my age group. I had to become a leader and become more focused on accomplishing tasks because it was what was required at that time. That time developed me into a great leader and person
