Personal Narrative: My Trip To Georgia Southern

Decent Essays
I am from a town close to Statesboro, and Georgia Southern is the school my dad went to. I grew up hearing stories about the fun times that he had here, and anytime we came to Statesboro he would take me around campus and show me his old dorm, apartment, and class buildings. My favorite story to listen to him tell is about the watermelon that would be cut and given out to all of the students. I fell in love with the school in his stories, and when I was given the chance to choose, I picked Georgia Southern.
I duel enrolled at Georgia Southern for two years before I was enrolled as an official college student. I was forced to pick a major, because I was quickly running out of core classes to take. I was stuck between Psychology and History.

When I have traveled, I have seen a lot of different things such as landscapes, air quality, plant life, etc. When I was 2, I moved to Miami, Florida, which I don’t remember much about. Then we moved to Columbus, Georgia where I spent half of my childhood. Georgia looks way different than here in Virginia. The air and the land is drier and it’s more humid down there.…

Growing up in Mississippi as an African American young woman has given me a different perspective of life. As I reflect on my life, my childhood came with morals and values that were instilled at an early age. My mother and father had three beautiful children, two girls and one boy. On a sweltering summer day in the City of Atlanta or the “ATL” as it is affectionately known today, I visited my best friend while he visited his father for the summer. That day I remember vividly because as soon as we stepped outside of the airport to take the “MARTA” train, I began to sweat profusely. Anyone that has been to Atlanta during the summer knows it is incredibly humid there. A week earlier I had seen my friend, and we planned out what we were going to do that week I visited. I knew I wanted to visit Spellman College, Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morris Brown College, but before I could visit the Atlanta University Center or the “AUC” as it is called to the locals, I felt compelled to visit the grave site of one of the most influential human being to walk this earth.…

The only thing in the world that’s constant is war. It was an aphorism murmured in the sticky summer of 1864 as the Civil War tore America apart—and it was a truth that had only become more evident in my more than twenty years as a vampire. Every time I picked up the paper, there were stories of humans fighting humans: brawls on the streets of San Francisco, uprisings in India, insurrections all over Europe. And once blood had been shed and graves marked, they’d start all over again.…

In my understanding, that was my command to do. Give selfish treatment to one man but give all credible treatment to the other, who in all shed the same blood fighting. I became deeply distraught by this segregated treatment because of some set value one man has to have just by the color of his skin. In disgust, I still had to do what was meant for me to do. I would work on the black soldiers and a woman named Clara Barton would work on the white soldiers. I grew interest into wanting to know how she felt about this unfair situation, however it was prohibited to step near her or inside the white soldier’s tent.…

For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…

The Barbie house along with all of its occupants was the hardest to give away. Since Barbie dolls were difficult to get in Russia, my father would send me some from the United States. As my mom prepared for her trip to the States to undergo chemotherapy treatments, I reluctantly relinquished my most prized possessions. Assuming that the cure was just around the corner and to shelter me from the battle, it was decided that I would move to the Republic of Georgia to live with my aunt. While the year’s I spent in Georgia during my mom’s illness and after her passing were filled with hardships, my subsequent life in the United States and, ultimately, all of the opportunities that I have been given by the many individuals involved in my upbringing, solidifies in me a strong belief that adversity is surmountable.…

There’s this one route that has me stuck on not being able to be my best. I say this because at 7:06 a.m. I drop my daughter off at school. The D12 going to Southern Avenue is always late. He is always conversing with the customers when they get on the bus, and my biggest issue is the bus driver sometimes sitting at a bus stop waiting for someone. Experiences as an SVSU English major My freshman year at SVSU began in a way that I could only explain as equal parts terrifying and exhilarating. There I was, three hours away from home, surrounded by (and living with) seven complete strangers who I somehow felt like I had nothing in common with. I came in with pretty much no idea what I was doing, who I wanted to be, or what the next four years would be like, and a tentatively declared English major.…
