Personal Narrative: My Passion For Animals

Who are you?.. Tell us about yourself.

I am an animal lover from a small town who is allergic to every animal I have ever owned. This has been a small hurdle though since I have learned how to deal with it and most importantly, get back to the critters I love so much. My passion for animals prospered when I joined 4-H. Originally I joined with cavies and photography however soon I was in rabbit 4-H as well. I started my heard with two Mini Lops, one of which I breed twice. Over the years I have extended my herd to include a Silver Martin, Jersey Wooly, Silver Fox, Netherland Dwarf and Holland Lop as well. Currently I have two Mini Lops, a Silver Fox and one Holland Lop which are the breeds I have found myself to have a soft spot for. I have stuck with cavies as well and currently own an American and American Satin. Finding success in both animals I have gone from county fair, to state fair, to some open shows and even National Convention. This year I have aged out of 4-H as a member, but I shall soon be back as either a leader or an assistant. My time studying and working with these creatures is not over yet, however, my enjoyment of studying these animals has led me to decide to further my knowledge and become a Veterinarian.

Rabbits have taught me the importance of patients. When I work with any animal, especially new animals they tend to be nervous and it is impossible to handle them safely and effectively if I am just as nervous. Instead, I have found that forcing myself to stay calm and practice works much better with not just rabbits but many aspects of life as well. I have tried to show this to younger members in my club and FFA members when I give rabbit clinics and when I show beside them.

I worked in the biology lab labeling pelts, bones, and animal specimens; by twenty-one, I obtained my bachelor’s degree and strived for my first job out of university. That summer, I joined Humane Society Naples and worked as a veterinary assistant, while also volunteering at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in wildlife rehabilitation. This is my turning point and reminds me of Claudia at age seven, who wanted to save animals. The most vivid and unforgettable part of my time there was seeing the transformation of the animal’s health and behavior. From the time, they come into the shelter, scared and sometimes in pain, to then being apart of the team to medically assess and treat them, to witness their ability to play with other animals, and then to the joys of adopters coming in looking for their forever pet, is…

Abby Helgeson. I questioned Dr. Helgeson on how she first became interested in the idea of becoming a veterinarian. Dr. Helgeson has lived on her farm her whole life, being surrounded by both small and large animals, and also worked as a spare hand at the Nicollet Veterinary Clinic for years before she even graduated high school. She has always had a love for animals and decided to pursue them in her future. She and I are very similar in this way, as I too have always had a love for animals and have been exposed to interaction with many different kinds.…

Becoming a vet has been my lifelong goal and the focus of my education. I’ve cared for domestic and non-domestic cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, mice, mallard ducks, hermit crabs, turtles, frogs, fish and Madagascar hissing-cockroaches. My pets inspired my passion for animals. I am amazed by their unique forms of communication, instinctive behaviors, and the trust given to humans who care for them. My pets have provided me with many learning experiences which have included: rabbits with abscessed teeth, an impaction, respiratory disease(s), a duck with a broken wing, and cats with heart disease and cancer.…

When contemplating what I wanted to achieve, looking back on my childhood, I had an assortment of animals such as, hamsters, rabbits, and dogs. Taking a look down memory lane, I can remember having a tenderness and yearning for animals from the past until now, I have nursed and taken care of animals for so long On the day I graduated high-school I was sure I wanted to become a veterinary technician. Caretaker for my animals, I have medicated and cared for them when they were ill, including hygiene such as clipping nails, cleaning ears, and bathing. Watching the animal planet, observing the technician and the veterinarian doing everything they could to save an animal’s life, inspired me to believe I can do the same thing. After graduating,…

3.History of abortion To understand how abortion’s legalization affects economics and politics, we have to look at why it was banned in the first place. Abortion was a common practice in early America, up until the 1880s, when laws began to take effect that limited access to abortion for the sole purpose of giving practicing physicians a monopoly over all contraception, cutting out the homeopaths and midwives. This was then morphed into a fight to stop abortions because of a want to keep white wealthy protestants the majority (who also at the time were the largest users of abortion). Additionally, the laws were a manifestation of a cultural idea that those who attempted to skirt their gender-assigned role as child bearer should be punished…
