In my Shakespeare Seminar class I took first semester I found myself having a difficult time staying focused and fully connecting with the text. I decided then to listen to audiobooks as a classmate had suggested. Later what I discovered was extraordinary. I noticed higher scores on my papers and uncovered a new way of learning. I used this method in other classes only later noticing that my grades were drastically rising.…
I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…
Since starting high school, my interest in classroom learning had dropped quite significantly. I felt like grades were just a game, and that I should be out in the world learning things I deemed "practical life skills." My senior year I was able to mentor in a classroom of fourth graders for one period, ever other day. I took the class thinking it would be an easy and fun way to spend an hour an a half.…
On Saturday, September 16, my learning community Common Grounds and I went on a trip to Philly; Once we got there, we visited two different types of churches. After we visited the churches we went to Reading Terminal Market for Lunch. We then talked about our day and what we thought about all the stuff that we learned about that day. The first church that the we visited was Old Saint Joe’s Catholic Church.…
During this semester I have learned multiple things in my class GSW 1110, I learned the skills to research, write, using correct grammar and syntax, as well as setting goals to improve my skills as a writer. Through class exercises and writing the different types of papers, I was able to learn those skills. Skills such as having better vocabulary by using a few new words. Another goal is having a better flow throughout the essay by not going into detail about information that does not need to go into depth. A few more goals are better planning of ways to set up an essay and having credible sources and more information about sources.…
My Learning Memoir I come from a city called Fuzhou, a middle-size city located in the southeast of China. There is a phenomenon that the Chinese always prefer boys over girls, especially in my hometown. My paternal grandparents and my father wanted a boy as well, whereas my mother gave birth to me, an unexpected girl, in 1997. My grandparents seemed not to accept that they got the second granddaughter after I was born. My grandmother made me keep my hair very short and brought me up like a boy before I went to the kindergarten at the age of three.…
I learn the best when I am actually interested in the subject and when there is nothing distracting me paying close attention to what I need to know. I dont really learn by writing things down because I dont study so I dont look back at things I have written. Listening to hear is actually one of the ways I learn best because I do not like reading things I prefer listening to them for a better visualization. Visualizing things also helps a lot because sometimes picturing things in your head its easier to learn as well in my opinion. In class I work in the middle because its never fast or too slow when I work fast its because I feel the urge to finish as fast as possible and when I work slow its because I am not in the mood or I dont understand the work.…
For my second well-being strategy I focused on gratitude. I wasn't surprised that this was one of my best-fitting strategies because I firmly believe in the power of gratitude. In order to make sure I was expressing gratitude every day I decided to make my evening prayers focused on only expressing thanks. This also takes a little from the spirituality activity since I would be focusing my gratefulness on God, even though it wasn't one of my best-fitting strategies (which did surprise me). I had thought of gratitude as simply saying thank you for something, however, my view changed after reading Lyubomirsky's perspective.…
As a youth I faced numerous challenges that resulted in me beginning my educational journey later than expected. Growing up my father, an immigrant from Honduras, sold narcotics out of our home which had a lasting effect on me after he was later deported which also created a slew of issues for me as a youth. As a result of the traumatic experiences that I had witnesses and endured, I dropped out of high school as the stresses of living in such a dangerous environment were too distracting at the time to focus in school. Though my father was deported after I had dropped out of school, I quickly faced an array of issues after he was deported that further hindered me attending school, as I did not have a safe place to sleep, or stay at as our house…
What Went Well The content of the lessons went well, for lack of a better phrase. I knew my stuff, and the activities were planned well. (It helped that my mentor teacher had already taught the lessons a number of times and was able to give me good material to work with for the lessons.)…
I remember this day like it was yesterday. My teacher told our class to go down the row saying one to five. Leading everyone to yell that they want to pick their own partner. I remember me saying two and later on Bridgette saying two. We both looked at each other giving each other the dirtiest look and rolling our eyes.…
What I Have Learned From This Course. As a matter of fact, learning is not one of my favorite subject. I tend to get bored over time. If I learned same old things over and over again. In other word, history classes teach us same old things, and the fact that I have taken many history classes in high school before.…
My education is my responsibility. Teachers and mentors have guided me along my journey, but, ultimately, I am the only one who can ensure that I know the material. Since taking responsibility for my education, my capability for learning and working with my teachers has dramatically increased. Academic success is largely built upon a student’s work ethic and understanding the student’s learning style. My time in advanced classes during high school has forced me to become prepared for the realities of the work and expectations in college.…
As my best friends, Daniesha, Derrick, Lashantae, and I entered the classroom, we could already sense that we were out of place. Green Team was run by the eighth grade general science teacher, Mr. Lincoln, who wasn’t the biggest fan of my friends, or in his words “you need friends just as great of a student as you”. Daniesha, Derrick, and Lashantae weren’t the type of people I expected to become so close to, they accepted D’s on their report cards, they cursed, and bullied our classmates for fun. Despite all of these things, they lived in my neighborhood and found me to be funny (in a cheesy way), so I guess I stuck around because I enjoyed being accepted for something I always felt awkward about. With Mr. Lincoln as the facilitator of Green…
When I first started school I thought that it would take me awhile to adjust. All throughout my senior year of high school everyone had told me that college is completely different from high school and that I need to change my study habits. So far I have been able to handle everything “so that I can increase my odds of winning” (Harry, 2015, p. 31) by adding little adjustments to my usual schedule as the year goes on. I can usually handle deadlines pretty well, however, if there are some times when I forget something is due and I spend the whole day focused on that one task until it is complete. I can understand how my instructor teach and what they expect within a couple of weeks in the class.…
