Personal Narrative: My Journey At Philmont Scout Ranch

“Is anybody not ready? Hike On.” I exclaimed countless times on my twelve day trek at Philmont Scout Ranch. My much older brother had ventured to Philmont with our dad fifteen years before my trip, so as you can imagine, I grew up hearing stories of the 137,000 acre paradise perched within the Sangre de Cristo mountains in New Mexico. Philmont is a twelve day strenuous backpacking experience and not for the faint of heart. Luckily for me, I was eligible at fourteen and my dad was healthy and willing at fifty-three, so he could have the same bonding experience with me as with my brother. Having my father there made me feel more secure and confident about the trip. This was also a healing experience for us as we lost my paternal grandfather …show more content…
In the eyes of the camp, the crew leader is in charge, not an adult chaperone, and they are treated as such by staff. Adding to the gravity of my responsibility, a youth lost his life in a flash flood several weeks prior which made me realize the obligation I had to make good decisions. Among our crew, we had people of different hiking ability, which created a rift between swift hikers who wanted to arrive sooner, and the slower backpackers who became self-conscious about their speed. This tension culminated on our 10th day, when the slower hikers left before the rest of the group. The strategy of getting a head start was not the problem in my eyes, but to not run it past the leader was inappropriate. I felt that this divisive action went against the best interests of the crew. When we rejoined, I challenged the adult who made the decision to leave early. Previously, he tried to convince me to wake up the crew sooner, which I promptly refused. After this incident he expressed my dad how disappointed he was in me. He thought this could manipulate my opinion, which I did not appreciate. This adult was used being in charge, so deferring to me, along with

I consider Camp Kanata a second home, I worked my first full summer as a camp counselor after junior year. That summer was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life; I learned, laughed, and cried everyday, I also created amazing friendships. Yet when asked about what made my summer so spectacular a few months later, I had little to say, my mind was blank. I cannot remember what happened a week ago, let alone what happened months and years ago. The number of special memories and moments I have forgotten about is unquantifiable.…

Question 6 During my volunteer work at Cornerstone Ranch and Rescue, I learned that physics could be applied to any aspect of everyday life. This has helped me solidify my understanding of physics and eager to learn more. The realization of how physics is everywhere has sparked my interest to want to learn more physics in order to get a better understanding of how and why the world works the way it does. The property owner related many concepts of horseback riding and ranch work with physics-related ideas so that I could relate them to a science-based mindset.…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

Throughout the course of my short seventeen years, I have grown and learned many things. I grew up in a small rural town called Elk Creek. There are no strangers in Elk Creek; people sleep with their doors unlocked and their windows open. Everyone who has grown up in a small town can agree that friendship and community become a second nature trait. Although I have copious amounts of love and respect for where I grew up; I believe that I do not belong there.…

One of the first things I remember about going on that trip is looking down at my feet and thinking that I would die if I fell. I was nine and very light-headed at the time. It was the winter of 2009 and one of the first times I had ever gone to Colorado. The drive there took about 6 hours from our house so you can imagine my excitement at finally getting out of the car as an inpatient nine-year-old. We were renting a small two story log cabin with a hot tub on the second- floor balcony from a family that had a winter home somewhere in Florida.…

When I was very little, walking up the trail with a pack on my back and the dog at my side, I would reach out and pull leaves from the bushes and trees. I would tear off corners, smooth the edges, and they would be turned into spaceships, flying across a lush alien world. Sometimes the trail, worn down into the ground over time by paws and hooves, would climb its way up onto the crests of ridges and meander across the moist, mossy fringes of muskegs. The rough, black and gnarled spruce branches that grew there were pirate spacecraft, pursued by the sleek birch branches from beyond the muskeg's soggy borders. As imaginary lasers and rockets exploded against the ships' hulls, I would rip off little pieces of bark and let them fall to the forest floor.…

After waking at midnight to start our summit in order to beat the possible rainstorms, we were off to climb Mt. Massive, the second tallest mountain in Colorado. Climbing rocks with heavy backpacks, crossing rivers, bushwhacking about 3 and a half miles, and dealing with heavy winds that almost blew us over, we finally found the trail!…

It was a definite change of scenery to be immersed in nature with lush greenery, crisp air, and ocean views instead of the normal classroom scene. I liked that this experience was a chance to interact with my colleagues and learn who they are on a personal level subsequent to grading their three-minute stories the previous Fridays. From this hiking experience, I learned the value of teamwork, effective communication, and what encompasses wholesome leadership as well as what can transpire when there is no leadership. As like all experiences, there are some parts I cherished and others not as much.…
