I was born in Cartagena, Colombia. Four years ago, I moved to Florida with the purpose to achieve a superior education. The change from one culture to another has been made a significant event in my life. Despite the language barrier and that I am a first-generation college student, I almost finished my Associate of Arts with a moderate-high grade point average. My goal is to learn the language well and be a chemical engineer.…
The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…
My college life started in the summer of 2012, all of my hopes and ambitions were suspended in mid air. The apogee of the first year of my college life in spite of facing the stigma of my age group; was that of the support I received from the instructors in helpimh making my career goals obtainable. During the second semester of my third year of college I started losing my passion. I changed my major from Anthropology to Criminal Justice and tried to keep going. However; needing to take a step back.…
My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…
Fall of 2013 I started the Early College Alliance, otherwise known as ECA. For those who do not know, when you first start ECA you take High School level classes, with other High Schoolers during your first semester. After teachers review your progress you’ll either be placed in College classes, because you’re what they call, “College Ready,” or you’ll take another semester of High School classes. During my second year of ECA, I was placed in EMU College classes. During this time I was exposed to an environment in which I was interacting with adults in a classroom setting, versus being in school with students in my age group.…
Life's a journey worth taking the unbeaten path. That is why, despite looking up to my loving parents and having the utmost respect for them, I have taken a different road than they did. However, undergoing any challenge without their guiding experience can certainly prove to be an undertaking. I, a first generation college student, am the pioneer of higher education for my family. Though I join many others in lunging out into the world for the first time, I am doing so without having a father or mother to tell me how to tackle the college experience.…
Several challenges occurred during my college career. I worked throughout the majority of my education to pay for books and tuition. My parents helped with the costs of attending college as well as supporting me when my studies became difficult. The experience of being the first in my family to work towards a bachelors degree meant a lack of guidance and advice. I sought out the advice of an adviser who I have been working with for the past three years.…
College for me was an unreachable goal that I had set my eyes on upon graduating from high school. Since I could remember I had was diagnosed with a learning disabilities. With theses disabilities colleges would be a hard road; nevertheless, I want to attend school. Starting in community college I worked long hard hours trying to grasps the high speed learning environment. Many times in college with disabilities, i would ask myself if it even worth it, many they were right to give up this goal.…
I first attended Appalachian about 15 years ago, entering in the class of 2000. Due to personal and family events, I wasn't able to graduate, so I am getting my second chance now, at both a degree and and the valuable experiences that being involved with the community and networking with others can bring. The one thing I did learn from my previous collge experience, both at Appalachain and at the community college I currently attend, is how much value comes from the colege experience outside of class - connecting with others who have different life experiences, and learning and doing things together to improve ourselves and the community. Since I intend to major in Communications/Journalism, I am looking forward to getting involved with student…
My College Essay A time when I experienced a failure was when it was my freshman year and I noticed that I was not doing as good in school like I should have been. So my sophomore year I told myself that I would try harder and do grade forgiveness of Florida Virtual School.…
I am a 22 year old in my third year of community college. I just made a challenging choice to quit the job I have loved for over a year to focus more on my academic needs, now that my amazing husband has the ability to cover all of our expenses financially with one income. I am super stressed about the desicion I have made. I worry about my children at work, my coworkers, and my ability to refrain from getting bored, since it will be the first time in nearly eight years that I have not had to work a normal "job. " I get to hone in entirely on academia; this makes me nervous, as I have always had a fear of being labled, "lazy, irresponsible..." like millenials often are today.…
Everyone life story is like a book, each day brings a new page and one can go back and read past chapters or create new ones and for me more than a week ago a whole new chapter unfolded for me when I started to attended college at Shippensburg University. My family and closest friends to this day support me on everything life hits me with and because of that I have always put them first. On my free time depending on the day and setting half the time I would go outside and hang out with my friends but usually if everyone is busy I would work out or develop a new skill that will be useful for me in the future. Throughout my whole life I have started with many friends at a young age just like every other kid but as time goes by you start to…
Today was a slow day, but very education. I am finding that out that my time at CTLC is better spent watching than actually doing things. When I walked into the double door facility I seen the usual faces, and I greeted them as I made my way back to my little small cubical office. When I arrived at my office about two minutes after greeting several people, I noticed a small green sticky note that was on my desk from the day prior. The note was to remind me about the Homeless Alliance meeting at the chamber of commerce in Temple TX.…
Life and Challenges of College I know College can be a challenge for any age. As a woman of 54 and in College, there are many challenges. College has been difficult for various reasons. I can rank assignments that have to be submitted first and on time, juggling home life and College work so.…
I experienced two big realities at the start of my college experience, both can be described as disappointing and surprising. I had heard rumors of what to expect out of college from my friends, what was portrayed in entertainment media such as YouTube, Facebook, or just general TV shows. Two of my expectations from college did not turn out as anticipated. I had the impression college would be more social than what I was lead to believe, as well as the intense academic difference from high school. As I worked through my first semester, I became aware of how college is more academically challenging and not as fun and social as high school.…
