Personal Narrative: My First Flipped Out Gymnastics

Improved Essays
Have you ever been pushed to the point where you felt like you couldn’t go any further, like your body and mind would fall apart if pushed harder? In gymnastics, you are pushed to your mental and physical breaking point. When it comes time to compete, you have to make sure you know your routine and how to make it win the perfect 10. I, as a newly-budding 5th grader, knew this decently well, and my first gymnastics meet was definitely one for the memories. Flipped Out Gymnastics, located in Howell, was where I trained and competed as a level 5 gymnast. But, I wasn’t always an acrobat who had their over-extended splits and connected back handsprings. Floor was my favorite part of competing. I remember standing off to the side, smiling, as I saluted the judges. Next, I stepped into my starting pose, and flowed with the music and my routine. Then, as I went into the ending pass, I gathered up all the courage I had and sprinted into a round-off, then two connected back handsprings, and stuck! My parents were so proud, I could hear them from the middle of the floor. That routine earned me a ribbon with the score ‘7.825’ on it, and I was content, even though I didn’t earn a medal. Winning isn’t always what matters most in a competition or sport. I sort of learned this the hard way. After the meet was over, we went to the award ceremony, where they handed out medals and trophies to the highest scorers. I went up to my family, and my sister gave me a funny look. “Where’s your medal, Hannah?” She questioned. I burst into tears, and my dad hugged me. “It’s okay, sweetie, you tried your hardest.” He reassured me. I realized then, that hey, it was the first meet in my entire life, and I worked so hard to get here, and had so much determination. All of it had definitely payed

I said excitingly to my coach,”I’m good to go.” My coach answered in reply,”Good.” Then I began to do my stretches while the rest of the team was working on their over-splits. When I was done catching up, we had to work on our bridges and our coach said,” Do two bridges for 30 seconds, ten jump-overs, ten jump to handstands, ten leg-lifts, on both legs, and ten elbow rocks.” After doing that tiredly, for a little these than five minutes, we went to the other side of the floor to do our warm-ups. It was then that I had started worrying even more about my roundoff backhand spring.…

As I began to re-master trick after trick that first year, kips and back handsprings started to feel as easy as walking- I could almost do them in my sleep. Although some days were better than others, I always kept the faith in my mind that I could do anything. Each and every year has held one obstacle for me, seemingly larger than a mountain. Last year, my junior year, it was a backflip- especially one connected to a roundoff flip-flop. This skill was my main goal, as well as my Achilles heel- it just wasn't working.…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

In the spring of my sophomore year I decided to rejoin the track team. After the first week, I noticed a new coach was on the far side of the football field working with a few kids teaching them to pole vault, so I went over and started to learn the basics of vaulting. A few practices went by, and my coach thought it was time for the beginners to start vaulting with a bar. My first attempt was an utter disaster; my back hit the bar and I fell straight down onto it, where it left a pretty sizeable bruise. Ted, my coach reassured me that I’d get the hang of it after more practice.…

I stood at the end of the line and threw a quick glance over to see what the others were doing. I was shaking like a leaf, from excitement or nerves I do not know. The cafeteria’s floor was cold beneath my feet and the wind was whistling outside the glass doors. A woman in a white outfit, that looked like pajamas, with a black belt around her waist came over to me and showed me what we were doing. After that first day, I begged my mum to let me join the martial arts school.…

As the rhythmic music started to play, I realized that my routine would determine my personal overall placement and the placement of my team. The pressure was on and I had to take a few deep breathes before I could focus on the importance of the next minute and eight seconds. I continued to match my skills with the timing of the music while listening to the cheering of the crowd and my nervous heart beating erratically out of my chest. Once I completed my last tumbling pass and stuck it, I felt a rush of relief pour through my body when I saw my score of a 9.65 that would secure me a spot on the podium.…
