As I reflect on my years as a black belt, it seems as if it was just yesterday that I walked down the candle lit path, wearing my brand new black trimmed dress uniform. I was told to walk slowly reflecting on my journey to this day. However, in my eagerness to finally be presented with my first-degree black belt; my mind was racing with anticipation. To me the black belt oath means to be a role model. Younger people and lower belts might want to look up to you. Therefor you need to train hard, be nice and encouraging, and always do your best. If you do not train hard or do your best, you will never get better. Think of it as if you took a line and on the right side it said “the best” and on the left side it said the worst.…

I was a reluctant student, being dragged to a martial arts class in a noisy gym for one hour twice a week. It has been nearly nine years since then, and Tae Kwon Do has helped me to overcome my shyness, my fears, my anxieties, and my stresses, and helped me grow into a stronger, more confident, and overall better person. This has all been thanks to Master Valdez. He taught Tae Kwon Do long before I entered the dojang, and has continued teaching it through the three location changes, the surges and droughts of new students, every single test, and a brief period of hospitalization.…

This time I was going for my first belt test. I looked towards the center, there sat 6 judges, each with a pencil and paper. In an attempt to remember everything I learned in class I began to run through the combinations in my mind; punch, punch, duck, wait or was it duck, punch, punch. I sat there waiting for my turn fearful that I was going to mess up. As I grew more anxious the other combinations seemed to mix together.…

I want to get my black belt because I don’t ever want to end my Tae Kwon-Do journey. Tae Kwon-Do has played a massive part in my life over the last four years and has helped me achieve things I would never dream of being able to do, for example it has helped improve my confidence greatly. I used to feel sick to the stomach at the thought of having to do anything while people were watching me however with my belt round my waist I feel powerful and that I can do anything as long as I try and don’t give up. I want to be able to help lower grades discover a side of them they didn’t think they had just as my instructors did with me.…

While reading The Man Search for Meaning, by Viktor E. Frankl I was filled with so many emotions that changed my way of thinking. The details of the concentration camps and the thought of not knowing when the next meal or if living another day would be an option really touched me. It’s hard to believe something so terrible happened to such innocent people who were just living their everyday lives. Frankl draws the reader into the point where they feel as if they are with him surviving the Holocaust one day at a time.…

I would say that achieving the level of black belt is liberating in a way, because not only is it a regression to the basics, it removes the material aspect of the game. Learning karate transcends from a race to the next colour, to an intimate experience of the self. This is something I experienced when I got my black belt three years ago. I feel like at that point, learning Kata was not a step towards getting my next belt; it was learning kata for the sake of learning it. Rather than extrinsically enjoying learning, which involves enjoying the end goal of an action, it became intrinsic enjoyment, which is the enjoyment of the action…
