Source 2 shows the wages and cost of living of ten different families. Five of the ten families’ living expenses exceeded their monthly income. Many husbands began sending their wives to work for another source of income, though even then, some families were still exceeding their income. Donna’s Determinants Income and Social Status- Donna’s family is considered to be a low income family. According to Living in Canada, the average annual wage of a painter is 10,416 (Living in Canada, 2014, para. 1), whereas her mother does not make an income, and stays at home with Donna and her three other siblings. Considering that Donna’s father is the main supporter of the family, his yearly income is not enough to provide essential needs for his wife and 4 children. This is shown through the video when Donna’s father speaks about about the family running out of food and having no choice but resort to food banks; which is directly related to the father 's income. Even when the family did have money for groceries, we noticed that whenever…

The flicker of a lamp powered by a dimly lit lightbulb flashed in intervals onto the cracked concrete path. Scattered shrub shavings, dried pine needles, and petrified insects encrusted the crevices left in between the cement squares. The long and narrow path led up to a strong yet aged wooden door that stood at the foot of the house. The house held nine people, three cats, and many tribulations to come. At first glance the house might’ve seemed ordinary; it had five bedrooms, two bathrooms, a laundry room, living room, kitchen etc.…

As a sixteen-year old high school student, one worked for minimum wage at McDonalds. The difference between one’s story and the countless stories of many is the level of responsibility with a low-wage job. According to Macionis (2012), fifteen “percent of heads of poor families worked full time, at least fifty weeks during the year, yet remained below the poverty line” (p. 36). In other words, hard work alone will not help the poor.…

“Baruch atah Adonai, noten ha’torah”, I passionately chanted before my friends, family, and the congregation of Beth Shalom. Those five Hebrew words, which had been ingrained in my memory over the past months, concluded my first aliyot; according to Rabbi Kosman, I was now a full-fledged man. No longer would I be sidelined to the kids’ table at family events nor constrained by the 10 o’clock lights-out policy. Rather, I would enjoy all the benefits that seemed to come from adulthood: rated-R movies, the occasional sip of wine at the dinner table, and access to my own personal finances.…

It was that time of the year again, autumn leaves fell from all that was left of the bare trees, naked as it’s last shield of warmth made it’s home to the ground, soon to be scattered away as giant beings forced them out of their yards.
