Marissa had come over to our house for the first time and had met my mother. My mother welcomed her, offered her a snack and soon let us do our own thing. As I stepped into the kitchen to grab a bottle of water, my mom walked up to me and said be careful who you trust and befriend sweety, not everyone is as kind as you and Nour - my sister -. It was clear that my mother had picked up a vibe that I had not but without much though I returned back into the living room to Marissa and my sister. At the the moment the new girl had seemed as an angel in disguise. Soon, middle school started and she had introduced us to her friends and everything seemed to be going perfect until less than 4 months in the school year we get called into the principal's office for apparently bullying Marissa at the bus stop. We clearly had not done this and we were so shocked that she had come up with such a story when it seemed like we were starting to become close friends. My mom was notified of the incident and when we came home she asked us if we had done this we said no because we clearly did not. My mother said to us “well I believe you, but again be careful who you talk to and who you trust, preferably don’t hang around with Marissa again.” We disregarded my mother’s words and the next day sat with her at lunch. We were living the pre-teen dream of wanting to be popular but that Middle school “fame” came with hefty price. The next three years of middle school were filled similar scenarios and much bickering with Marissa and sometimes giggling together. In reality, my sister and I were anything but the ideal freshmen. We ditched school, hung out with the wrong people and wasted time repeating the same middle school of of popularity. Nour and I became acquainted with people who knew Marissa and while my sister and I thought we had long terminated that friendship, we thought wrong because we could slowly start seeing the effects of that toxic friendship leak into our freshmen and sophomore years of high school. Although the middle school trouble consisted of small warnings by the principal and major lies by Marissa, high school trouble that was a result of the disastrous friendship resulted in fist fights, suspensions and the failing of classes.
