Personal Narrative: Moving Into A New House

Great Essays
The highly-anticipated move into our new house was approaching in three weeks. I had been anxiously awaiting this moment, for what seemed like forever. My parents decided to begin their life on Larchwood Court, in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, six months before I was born. Now thirteen years later, it was time to move on. Although we were excited, we were immensely sad as well. We became extremely close with multiple neighbors, and had mixed emotions about leaving the helpful bunch. On one Tuesday, in October of 2015, my family found out the true meaning of compassion and friendship. My mom, whom is a strong and independent woman, had just picked me up from field hockey practice, and when heading home we received a phone call. Initially, I thought nothing of this, but little did I know, the information that was given would come to change my life forever. This was the day that our house caught on fire, and the day that our brave neighbors risked their lives for us! Once my mom answered the phone call, right away I inferred that a tragedy had occurred. …show more content…
The tone of her voice changed to one that I did not recognize. My neighbor, Ken, was on the other line. I heard the panic in his voice as well, as he frantically yelled on the other end. Luckily, we had just turned into our neighborhood when we received the call, and arrived home only minutes later. The sight was like something out of a movie; there were at least three fire trucks, two police cars, and people everywhere you glanced. We joined the fire chief to discover what happened and to evaluate the damage. They kept questioning us over and over. I got the sense that they thought that one of us was responsible for leaving the bathroom exhaust fan on that day. I was proud of the strength that my mom showed, as she told the fire chief that she was one hundred percent certain that that was not the case. She then walked into the smoked-filled house. As my mom entered the house it was a cloud of smoke. She went up into the master bedroom and quickly peered into the bathroom, where the fire had started. An empty hole of water, soot and a melted pile of rubbish consumed the bathroom. Sounds coming from the industrial sized fans blowing, were as if a loud hurricane had passed through. The house produced and unbearable stench. It reminded me of sitting by an intensified fire pit for days. I despise the smell it leaves on my clothes and in my hair. The fire chief finally filled my mom in on the missing pieces of the puzzle… a boy in the neighborhood saw smoke coming out of the roof of our house, and ran to let the other neighbors know. Our friends, Ken, Paul, and John broke …show more content…
Instead of leaving with unforgettable memories from my childhood home, I came to the conclusion that this situation allowed me to proceed on with life. A feeling of insecurity took control of my emotions. Although, a combustion is never an enjoyable result, beyond any doubt my neighbors and I were able to build a stronger relationship. To this day, our family is extremely appreciative that our neighbors sacrificed themselves, demonstrating an abundance of kindness and devotion. Even though a devastating experience, it developed into a life-learning lesson and made the adaptation to a new household environment a little

The flicker of a lamp powered by a dimly lit lightbulb flashed in intervals onto the cracked concrete path. Scattered shrub shavings, dried pine needles, and petrified insects encrusted the crevices left in between the cement squares. The long and narrow path led up to a strong yet aged wooden door that stood at the foot of the house. The house held nine people, three cats, and many tribulations to come. At first glance the house might’ve seemed ordinary; it had five bedrooms, two bathrooms, a laundry room, living room, kitchen etc.…

There was, however, a remarkable amount of smoke damage in the entire house— enough to replace or professionally clean the majority of our belongings. We would be displaced at least a few months, but the timetable could go as long as a year and a half. Slowly my thoughts and dreams of going home, were turning into nightmares. The firefighters told my parents that we were around three minutes away from losing the entire house; three minutes away from losing every childhood memory.…

Stepping into my house is very different from stepping into my room, because there are different decorations. Upon entering my house there are many religious pictures, pictures that depict the Mexican culture, and even the aroma is also very distinct from my bedroom. Looking at how some of the old furniture stands out reminds me of when McPhee stated, “I stepped up into a kitchen, and went on into another room that had several overstuffed chairs in it and a porcelain-topped table, where Fred Brown was seated, eating a pork chop” (96). Once stepping into my room a person will notice how I have various lights around the room and how I usually have relaxing music playing in the back ground. I’ve been told that once stepping into my room it makes…
