Personal Narrative: I Want It That Way

Great Essays
We pulled up to AA early. AJ and I spent the day shopping, wondering around town and wasting time. It was good to have such a great distraction, and I was really beginning to like AJ. He was funny, and I hadn’t laughed that hard in a long time. “Let’s smoke a cigarette before we go in” I said, pulling out my pack. We lit up simultaneously.

“Thanks for showing me around town, I had a good time. Who knew a smaller town like this had such wonderful shopping? So many cool boutiques, I’m in love. And the antique store you took me too, that was wicked. I’m definitely going to be spending some serious time and money in that place. This town is pretty nice, it seems to have everything you could ever want without being a massive, challenging city

I laughed a little.

“Piano. I took piano lessons for years. I’m not the greatest but I do have a love for it. Do you play any instruments?”

He didn’t say anything. A song came on, “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys, and I started humming along. Abruptly, AJ started singing with it. I just looked at him. “You know this song?” I asked. “And you sing?”

“I guess it is pretty popular right now.” I said. “Well, I have been singing it for a while now.”

I just looked at him, puzzled. “What do you mean, you’ve been singing it for a while? What does that mean?”

“Oh, come on Harley. You know what it means.” AJ sighed. I could feel his mood shift, something had set him off or was bothering him, but I didn’t understand.

I thought for a moment. “No, I really don’t.”

I studied him while he was deciding what to say. He looked puzzled. “I thought you’d have it figured out by now.”

I was getting frustrated. “Figured what out, AJ?”

“Jeez, Harley. Think about it. What have a told you about me? Working in entertainment, with four other guys. The car I drive. Just now, singing along with the song. Hell, just look at me. That should have given it

It was a warm and cozy afternoon, with the temperature reaching 75 degrees at max. The sun rays were still shining brightly, casting shadows across a wide field full of green grass. The sounds of various birds chirping can be heard clearly everywhere, and occasionally a butterfly would fly around, landing gently on the ever-fragile petals of the clarie flowers. Right next to the field was the woods of the Kaiboro Forest, a mysterious place full of never-ending clumps of trees(that was so an exaggeration... it is small in a way but hard to navigate so no one has ventured in it much)...…

When the text begins, Dorian is introduced as a flawless young man that was pure and beautiful. Basil’s painting reflects this perfection, and even Dorian is blown aback by his own looks. The bathroom was compact with light beige walls, slightly darker tiles, and a white counter top. Again, the prominent odor of cleaning products and bleach burned my nostrils. I splashed some water on my face, grabbed a bleached white towel from the rack, and blotted my skin dry. A hot mess didn’t do my current appearance justice, I looked like death warmed over, and that was being kind. My blue eyes looked dull, as did the rest of me.…
