Upon reflection, I have realized what this truly means: not only in a general sense, but for me personally as well. Ultimately, it translates to mean that I belong to the most distinguished and respected military power in the history of the world. This is not to be taken lightly. The United States of America is unmatched in its capacity to provide and execute control of the land, air, and sea both above and below in addition to administering humanitarian relief to those in need. America’s Navy dominates the nautical environment; and I, as a member of its ranks, endeavor to fully provide it with the due esteem and admiration worthy of it. Even when facing the eves exhaustion, an honorable man stands a fitting watch. To serve the Navy one must maintain a proper state of health and fitness not only for themselves, but also to sustain the valor and morale of a unit as a whole. Each and every individual should strive to be a respectable Sailor, one that others can look up to, consult, and seek fellowship from if need be. Furthermore, the title “courageous” may only be ascribed to individuals who perform righteous acts, even when others are not vigilant. Should incidents arise in violation of various rules or regulations, then a courageous man would dutifully inform the appropriate authorities or chain of command. Commitment is discovering determination within to continue persevering through hardships. Every Sailor should be dedicated to persistent and regular studies in an effort to increase qualifications and remain an educated and useful member of the workforce, as well as to gain advancement. Nothing in life will present itself with an easy solution, and it takes commitment to always finish valiantly through to every end. Even the colors chosen to represent America’s Navy further encompass these core values, with gold symbolizing integrity and valor, and blue the beauty of Earth’s oceans which we fight to protect. Consistent self-reflection is necessary in order to be certain that one is on course to better him/herself, and as a result rise in rank. In the words of the SEAL’S: “the only easy day was yesterday.” To receive respect, one must also give it. This falls along the saying of “treat others as you would like to be treated.” The Navy does not (nor should it) permit others to engage in prejudice, discrimination, partiality, or sexual victimization. It simply does not belong in the honorable institution that the Navy is. Ethics and character are, in fact, not biased attributes.
