Personal Narrative: How Computer Science Changed My Life

There are 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don’t.”-Anonymous. Coding was the biggest change in my life that inspired me to look at life interactions in a contrasting way. Life changed for me the moment I stepped into AP Computer Science A, since this was the wellspring of my future.
When I started Computer Science A, I thought it was not unpleasant. Unfortunately, that all changed when I got my first assignment. Then on was a conundrum, since I had no idea how to solve any of the teacher’s problems. After the 1st quarter, I thought I’ve had enough, and I almost switched out of this class. But, that all changed the moment I thought about my future. I pondered to myself, “Hey! What will be the most

Even though I only got a B as a final grade, it was a lot better than when I started. Besides, I also passed the AP exam, being among the 60% in the nation to pass a VERY difficult exam. I was very pleased with myself, challenging my brain to take on coding. I decided I was not even close to finishing, and I chose to take another coding class named Oracle.
Oracle was a different class, and it was all about database management. It was a lot easier for me to do this class; I had background knowledge. Additionally, I loved this class, for it was something different and interesting. Every day, I would look forward to either coding, or socializing with my friends/teacher.
Aside from that, I was preparing for one of the biggest certification tests in my oracle class. It was a difficult exam, where my teacher only had one person to pass it. Funny thing was, I did not expect that the person who passed it was my friend that I knew from my school’s debate team. This made me anxious, since she was a BRILLIANT student with high achievements. She not only passed this exam, but she published 2 apps, and she got a competitive internship at NSA. Furthermore, she only has to do 3 years of college, since she obtained 25 college credits from AP

Unlike many of those who enter into Computer Science programs in college I have only recently, in the last couple of years, started programming. During my senior year of high school a friend of mine and myself started playing around with C++ for fun during a vocational networking class accomplishing very little and not getting any desired results. At that time I had no clue that a couple short years later I would have a deeper understanding of proper programming methodologies and an understanding of a variety of languages to meet specific needs. It is often that you will see, or at least I have seen, when speaking to others programmers, that programmers believe that their language of choice is the language that will solve every problem that…

Religion in Beowulf Religion is a sensitive issue in Beowulf, because this story was taken from early medieval times period when the pagan religion was practiced. However, the story has been Christianized because it was told in late medieval Anglo-Saxon Britain and the Christianity was widely practiced this time. If this story was told in early medieval time it would have been told more about pagan, but because of the time period and the number of audience was Christian, the ideas of both Christian and pagan elements exist in the Beowulf. One of the religious concepts in this story was Grendel’s character.…

Boarding school was liberating, so much so that I focused almost solely on my computer science passion to the detriment of other subjects. I founded the Programming Club to teach peers to code well beyond the two school computer science (CS) classes offered, resulting in furthering my coding knowledge to prepare for growing classes. Naively, I plotted ideas to become the "next big thing". Needless-to-say my report cards showed one cannot be a genius without studying.…

It wasn’t until high school that I really began to understand how I could actively utilize that pragmatic and enthusiastic part of myself. I reveled in the increasingly abstract problems and concepts from my math and science classes that discouraged my peers. Despite that, the only class that managed to completely captivate my attention was my computer science. Every problem that I encountered in that class seemed like a thousand piece puzzle with only the tiniest of clues to hint at a way I could solve the problem; the challenge was intoxicating. Equipped with greater knowledge about computers and code from my teacher, I could take on more daunting challenges and projects than I could have ever imagined when I was nine.…

By the end of the year, I decided that I had enough knowledge to make my first application. Starting off small, I created a simple calculator that computed the volume and surface area of a given 3D object. While creating this game, I encountered a lot of obstacles such as creating a GUI —something that was not in the curriculum, It was then that I was grateful for struggling early on to realize that this is what it takes to become a true programmer. A programmer must struggle to learn from his mistakes repeatedly before he can make a polished and refined program. This mentality seeped into my work ethic…

Programming has always come pretty easily to me and I have never had any problems picking up a new programming language but that was in the classroom. I was about to dive in to the deep end so to speak and I wasn’t completely sure I could stay above water. I found myself in a strange looking room surrounded by factory lines and strange machines I would soon know well called the demo room. The silence was broken with a “Top of the morning to ya!” as I turned to see my supervisor Eoin, and one of the other interns Tyler who had started a two weeks ahead of me.…

Another reason I chose computer science is because computers are shaping the direction our world takes and I want to play a part in that. The idea of writing a program that helps a physicist decode the secrets of the universe or a doctor discover a cure for a serious disease holds great appeal for me. Computer science is a continually growing field and with computers becoming involved in almost every aspect of our lives it should remain so for the foreseeable future. Thanks to computer chips imbedded in everything from basketballs and shoes to computer-controlled thermostats more and more computerized data is being produced daily and to manage the acquisition, storage and use of this data will require computer scientists [1]. While sending jobs overseas will slow some aspects of computer science-related job growth overall computer science jobs are expected to continue growth through 2020 [3], [4], [5].…
