Personal Narrative: Growing Up In Rural Nebraska

Superior Essays
Growing up in rural Nebraska had its benefits and drawbacks. The freedom to virtually do anything outside was nice, but it came at the expense of my social life along with making my aspirations harder to follow. I wouldn’t trade my experiences for anything, but I would be lying if I told you I didn’t struggle living in a rural community. The pressure of being a farmer’s son is very high. General tasks usually range from chores to operating machinery. The problem that I encountered was a lack a trust within my family. My father was a perfectionist with regards to anything he owned. For instance, if any of our vehicles, including work trucks, received a scratch or a scuff mark my father would get extremely upset. This unhealthy obsession of perfection carried over to his machinery and farm work. Due to perfection, I was never taught how to run any of our machinery. It wasn’t for a lack of trying. Whenever we were not swamped with tasks to complete I would ask my dad if he could teach me. The answer was and is still the same today. No. High school was the worst. I hated the eight o’clock start time, the classes, most of the teachers and the majority of my graduating class. In high …show more content…
In 4-H I showed beef and dairy cattle along with numerous building exhibits which ranged from photography, gardening, wood working, baking, crafting and sewing. My favorite part of the Richardson County Fair was the showmanship competition for beef cattle. I was a proud winner of the showmanship jacket for eight years in a row. In FFA I ironically served as Reporter and would become president of the Falls City chapter. Being president of the chapter was a great experience, but I always felt a bit out of place. During FFA week it was weird to see most members driving their parent’s tractor while I continued to drive my half ton truck. Luckily, the president position was mostly focused on

Although my high school years are mostly defined through academic success, I would have to say my most meaningful achievements came through the North Carolina FFA. This national organization provides me with countless opportunities to showcase my leadership abilities in my school, community, and state. Obtaining the positions of Vice President and President of my high school FFA chapter has had an enormous impact on my life. These positions led to serving on nominating committees, planning community events, attending leadership conventions and conferences, and participating in a state-qualifying parliamentary procedure team. It was these experiences that gave me a passion for public speaking and Agribusiness.…

With the windows down, the crisp, cool summer air permeated throughout my body, acquiring every hair to stand at attention. Buffalo surrounded and granged lazily through the corn fields that shot high to the sky, as if every row was assembled soldiers getting ready to march. South Dakota is known for open fields with a consumed, laid back lifestyle with not much ever going on. Going into the trip knowing this, I was not in the least bit excited. It was when I absorbed the laid back atmosphere and appreciated every single bit of their way of life.…

I’ve lived my entire life in Indiana, as have my parents. My mom and dad were raised close to Monroe and went to Adams Central, where they met and fell in love. They ended up moving north to Fort Wayne where they had my sister and I. We began our schooling in FWCS, but we moved farther north to the tiny town of Huntertown later, which led to my sister and I switching to NACS for my high schooling and her middle and high schooling. Due to all of the events that have happened here in Indiana throughout my life, and due to most of my immediate family living in the area, I have a desire to continue living and working here.…

As teenagers growing up in Powder Springs, Georgia during the 1980’s, it was somewhat challenging at times to find safe and entertaining ways to occupy our time. Even though we did not have free reign to do as we chose, I would not categorize my parents as extremely strict. Relying on our parents, as if they were our personal taxi service, my sister and I struggled to find activities relatively close to home. After discovering we really enjoyed skating, we spent countless Friday and Saturday nights at the Sparkles Skating Rink in Paulding County. The indoor facility was a safe environment for teenagers, which provided my parents with a certain level of comfort to allow us to gather with friends.…

As a young armadillo growing up in Texas during the 1820s, my life was peaceful and happy. The Federalists who held power in Mexico left me, my fellow armadillos, and the Anglo Americans alone to enjoy and work the land. However, in 1829, the Centralists gained control of the Mexican government and the freedom we enjoyed gradually eroded. As the Mexican government imposed more regulations on the Anglo Americans, the tension which had existed between the two groups due to the Nacogdoches land grant, become even more palpable.…

I was driving down Montana 28. Legally Blonde was blaring through my speakers as I looked at the beautiful scenery. I was only 2 hours from Glacier National Park, which sounded like nothing after my grueling 10 hours leading up to that point. Suddenly my car slowed to a stop. I couldn’t go above 3 mph.…

I consider my hometown to be Grand Forks, North Dakota. I was born at the former United Hospital in Grand Forks in 1994, and have lived here for my entire life—with the exception of about a year spent in Walhalla, North Dakota, due to the flood of 1997. The schools that I attended while growing up are all within fifteen minutes of driving from my current house. My parents live just 6.2 miles away from me. Although Grand Forks is my city of birth, it wasn’t until I started college that I really considered it my hometown.…

Just a city girl born in South Detroit and raised in West Bloomfield. Growing up in Michigan is a unique experience that a lucky few get to call theirs. It is something the rest of the states get a preview of through a flash of images and clips in “Pure Michigan” commercials. My childhood was a fortunate one filled with road trips for sunsets “Up North” and Mackinac Island fudge. Nowhere could compare to being raised in this odd mitten-shaped state.…

There isn’t anything more breathtaking than going Up North. If you’re not from Michigan you might be wondering, “Where up north?” In Michigan we use “up north” as a term for the upper half of the mitten, I’d say from the top of the thumb up. The UP (Upper Peninsula) can be considered Up North but normally it's just the UP.…

Moving to Wyoming “We are moving to Wyoming” my mom said. A couple days into summer vacation the plan to move was finalized. At dinner that night the whole family agreed to then proceed with this new adventure. My mother had good reason, she said we would have access to a better education in Wyoming, it would reduce the number of times we commuted over Teton pass and it would help my father’s work be less stressful. The move, for me, was difficult, but I persevered through it and became stronger in the process.…

Growing up in southern Louisiana I often found myself sitting around and enjoying the abundance of delicious foods the area had to offer. My family would often eat more fried foods in a day than most families would eat in a week. By the time I was 10 years old I was weighing almost 150 pounds. I often found myself alone watching other kids gather up to play sports in the park. Lacking the physical strength and social skills to compete I often found myself at the early age of 10 seeing a doctor to deal with the stress of not being able to play with other kids.…
