Personal Narrative: Growing Up In Maine

Growing up in Maine had so many advantages from the beautiful scenery to the unique qualities Mainers have. I can't say that I'm not blessed to have grown up in such a beautifully scenic place, but I can't say it's been easy. I'm originally from land-locked Indiana. I moved to Maine when I was younger with my parents and brother and as much as I love being from a different place it's been hard growing up without a close family in a state so closely tied together with their families. Growing up in Maine, especially Mid-Coast Maine, you know that all of the surrounding families have lived there for generations, everybody knows everybody, cousins go to school together, and siblings work together. I wasn't excited because I knew it was just another event for families and it was going to be packed in that gym. As I reluctantly marched in with my classmates I saw my parents and brother sitting in the seats taking pictures and smiling, while everyone else had people yelling every way to look at them I could focus on the three most important people in my life. It was then I realized how fortunate I was, I got to have a great life in a beautiful state with my family. It wasn't chaotic most of the time because there was so many of us, we could do so much more with it just being us, and through this my parents taught me that while it may be hard being on your own it's worth it. Not knowing anyone also made me a more outgoing person because I had to meet everyone and make new friends, most of my classmates already knew people because they're all related, but I got to know everyone in a different way. It has made me grow into the outgoing and adventurous person I am today. While there are many days I wish I had a big family around me I've truly been blessed to have both my parents and have the opportunity to live in such a wonderful

The day I moved to Georgia, we had been living in Texas for five years when my mom said we were moving to Georgia. I graduated my senior year from high school I thought she was lying, but she said that the VA center down in Texas was awful, and she didn’t like it there anyways, but she really wanted a better VA system. Then we started packing every month putting stuff in storage, and having to do open houses every other week, we had to clean, vacuum and take our pets with us every time we left the house until our house finally sold. Then we started looking at houses In Grovetown, also for a good school system then we waited 3 weeks for a house because we were looking at spots with upstairs and down stairs, a big backyard for or dogs, also a school…

Florida is a land of sun palm trees and sand. Florida being a southern state with sweet tea, Publix, and Disney just a few hours away, had many perks. I had never thought of what it might be like to grow up in a northern area, or just even outside of Florida. Up until my 14th summer I had always assumed everyone lived the same way I did. It had all started when I got accepted to a summer program in Washington D.C to attend a medical forum.…

Moving here from North Carolina when I was four changed my life completely, I was away from my family who I lived with my whole life, thrown into a school with a bunch of kids who lived here since they were born and told to “make friends.” This changed the next 13 years of my life to something I can never picture not having. The first four years, both my parents had full time jobs and my grandma helped raise me a lot, she taught me so many manners and how to behave, she even ended up living across the street from me for 2 of those years, they were rough for my parents, new baby, just moving, having to find jobs, making friends, and getting food on the table for me. Thats where my amazing family came in, with bringing home cooked meals…

I was in a deep sleep dreaming about my life until BOOM, my mom came in and told me to wake up. I was walking to the bathroom like a zombie to the bathroom brushing my teeth, taking a shower, and changing my clothes. We had to get to the airport as quickly as possible, because our flight leaves at five o’clock in the morning. Even though I was mad doing this I still enjoyed it because we were on our way to Florida!!This is great practice because one day I will have to do this again.…

The Barbie house along with all of its occupants was the hardest to give away. Since Barbie dolls were difficult to get in Russia, my father would send me some from the United States. As my mom prepared for her trip to the States to undergo chemotherapy treatments, I reluctantly relinquished my most prized possessions. Assuming that the cure was just around the corner and to shelter me from the battle, it was decided that I would move to the Republic of Georgia to live with my aunt. While the year’s I spent in Georgia during my mom’s illness and after her passing were filled with hardships, my subsequent life in the United States and, ultimately, all of the opportunities that I have been given by the many individuals involved in my upbringing, solidifies in me a strong belief that adversity is surmountable.…

Growing up in the United States I always felt that I had two competing identities, not unlike numerous other Americans, due to the ethnic background of my parents. My whole family is ethnically Russian. My mother was born in the Soviet Union, whereas my father is a second generation Russian. Despite being born in Columbus Ohio, Russian was the first language I knew, and I didn't even speak English until kindergarten. Being Russian is a big part of my identity, and when I was younger I would travel to Moscow regularly to visit my grandparents and relatives.…

I also had to learn a new language and get used to a new culture. Despite this, I really appreciate that my parents moved to the United States because, here, I have a lot of opportunities I would never have had in Mexico. For example, I have the opportunity to go to college in order to pursue a career instead of being a poor farmer like most of my family in Mexico. Moreover, my upbringing and culture have in a way taught me to appreciate all the things no matter how insignificant they may seem to be.…

It is about the feeling that emanates from a place as a combination of the physical environment and the surrounding community that produces a feeling of place. A place encapsulates an entire community of people and the folklore that is associated within the place. One must embrace their surroundings in order to get the full feeling of being from a place. I consider my place to be the state of Rhode Island. I grew up in that area and and connected with the people neighboring me and got in touch with my surroundings in which no other place gives me that same feeling of home.…

I hate reunions. To start with, you see/ meet people you will probably never talk to again. I get that it was nice for the older generations of my family, but for me is was just going to be ehhh.
