We had an open tryout the next year i saw this one kid that was really good his name was JJ he made the team and we started to get to know each other and we hit it off we were the starting guards and the best on the team and i found out that we are going to the same middle school so i was excited we became best friend. I was 11 going into middle school i was a 6th grader at bear creek middle school it was all black and i was the best basketball player there and everybody knew it because they have seen my videos and rankings. Me and JJ had a lot of classes together including P.E. and in P.E. it was like playing at creel park boi everybody thought they was fye and everybody wanted to get picked up and of course me and JJ were the best players in the school so we always got picked up. Sometimes we would be on the same team and sometimes we wouldn’t and when we weren’t boi i would be guarding him just like in practice and he would do the same thing. My dad and JJ were pretty cool given that he was our coach JJ would be over all the time after games and for just no reason. Basketball tryouts for the middle school team were coming up and me and JJ were going to try out even though it is very hard for a 6th grader to make the team JJ and I were determined to make it so

People coming from a different planet would think every day things we do in life are weird. What we have adapted to and think are normal look very weird to others who haven’t seen people doing things like this. Such as someone who has never shaved before would think that is very odd to shave your beard. Or someone who has never seen a drive threw would think it’s weird to have people have food handed out the window. As we think other cultures are weird we have to look at the fact that our culture is weird to others People that have never seen basketball would thing it is a bunch of people running around with a ball.…

Like all children all I ever wanted was to be big and do big people things. I engaged in a few family members that I would look up to and try everything they did. I use to pretend to go grocery shopping and being a parent at times. At the age of eight, I had worn the worst pain ever and that was watching my five, year old brother getting hit by a car while trying to cross the street riding a bicycle that had a loose chain. I remember him trying to get up and get to me, but a few adults that had witnessed the accident had told him to lay down.…

The chances of an impoverished youth making it to professional sports are 2 in 100,000 ( Johnson and Migliaccio 1995). In Hoop Dreams we see that neither William nor Arthur make it to the NBA. When these young boys do not reach the pros—as the odds foretell many of them return to their impoverished neighborhoods with no skill set outside of their athletic ability (Jones 2006). The pressure on these young males is immense and too often is not rewarded. William missed the birth of his daughter in aspiration of a professional basketball career that he never achieved.…

What I knew at the time was how to love the game. Going into the season I had heard negative things about the coach from players who were still on the team as well as from the ones who had quit. Naively, I disregarded what they said since I only cared that I finally had the opportunity to play high school basketball. I remember walking into the gym on the first day of tryouts hoping to make varsity. Surrounded by friends it would be nothing but exciting and fun – little did I know.…
