I, Cherry Valance and my friends are leaving our boyfriends for the night. We are going to have a girls night. “Let’s go get our hair done!” exclaimed Marcia. The girls and I go to the hair salon and passing the hair salon we saw Ponyboy and Johnny and some other Greasers. We got to talking and we decided to skip the hair salon and get to know each other and talk. “You’re different than I thought.” said Marcia. I agreed with Marcia and explained to Ponyboy that at school, she's a soc but when she's not around her boyfriend and the other socs, she can express how she truly feels about the Greasers.

Greasy Lake was a short story written by T.C. Boyle with a deeper meaning in it rather than just being a good read. The short story shows an idea of coming of age. Coming of age means to mature through events and have a different mindset. The characters go from bad boys to wanting to be good. This is due to the behavior changes of the narrator and his friends before the night, through the night, and in the morning.…

In Allan Johnson’s article, “The Trouble We’re In,” he talked about privilege and oppression. Privilege is when one group of people has something of value and another group of people doesn’t have it, simply because it is denied to them. On the flip side, oppression is the social factors that are passed down to people and prevent them from having a good life. One of the social characteristics that I identify for myself is that I am a well-educated student. I have only ever attended private schools, from kindergarten until college.…

In the book The Outsiders there is a lot of gang violence including street fights, robberies, and ganging up on one of the the opposing gang members. S.E. Hinton describes the Socs as the wealthier people that live in the better parts of town and the Greasers as the poor trashy part of town. Even though the Socs and Greasers aren’t that different, they still have war with each other for no apparent reason. Some people don't understand that Socs don’t act as the ideal Socs are, and some Greasers don’t act as the ideal Greaser. What sparked the big fight was when Johnny was defending himself and stabbed a Soc so Ponyboy didn’t get drowned by a few of them.…

S.E. Hinton’s coming of age novel The Outsiders tells the tale of two social classes, the poor greasers and the wealthy Socs. Set in 1960s Oklahoma, Pony Curtis, a sensitive fourteen-year-old greaser, gets caught up in a murder and experiences staggering amounts of heartache and grief over the course of just a few fateful days. Ponyboy narrates his story with vivid descriptions and thoughtful insights into the struggle between his impoverished gang and the privileged, vindictive Socs, who hurt greasers for fun with little to no consequence for their actions. Through her imagery, symbolism, and descriptions, S.E. Hinton makes the class struggle between the rich and poor a terrifying and violent reality.…

In seventh and eighth grade, Allison Clarke’s* murder attempts kick-started the best writing piece I’ve ever created. Let me clarify: she never put a knife to my throat or a gun to my head. Allison attempted murder in the subtle ways that bullies do. She wanted to see me break down, but I was too hard, too jaded by that point to care about what she did to me. Well, almost too hard and jaded.…

Life is like a game of poker. In poker everyone is dealt the same number of cards from the same deck. Some are lucky and get a Royal Flush, some get a Straight, and some are only given a hand which consists of a High Card. Life is the same way except instead of diamonds; clubs; spades and hearts, everyone is dealt a certain level of “education, income, occupation, and wealth, the four commonly used criteria for gauging [social] class” (Scott and Leonhardt 117). Not all of us are able to choose our education, income, occupation and wealth, we are just given our hand and we have to make do with what we have.…
