Personal Narrative: Enrolling Back Into College

Improved Essays
Ten years later, who would have thought? Yes, it took me ten years to enroll back into college after obtaining my Associates Degree in Electronic Engineering Technology from Thomas Edison College University. After thinking long and hard about deciding to further my education and to back to school to obtain my undergraduate degree, I decided to enroll in University of Maryland University College. I started off with taking two classes during the spring semester. This class was challenging because I haven’t had a writing college course since 1997! Ten years later, I began WRTG with 12th grade writing skills; now I have learned how to improve my grammar, my writing technique, and structure my paragraphs; I feel like a college freshman again. I’ve had good experiences as well as bad experiences with my writing class.
Having a full-time job, finding time to work out, along with being a wife, mom, student, and school teacher to my children and is not an easy job. Time management is the key to it all when dealing with multi-tasking life events and reality. That something I have had a hard time doing during this semester. In my mind, I would like to start my essay that Monday, complete my homework by Wednesday and proof-read my essay by Thursday. Then Friday comes around and I am cramming trying to complete my discussions, homework, quizzes, and the final touches on my essay. Starting the first week of school, I knew this class was going to be challenging but rewarding at the end. First two weeks of class was an experience.

I have not written an essay in a very long time, so the first essay was challenging. The great thing about this essay is that I had to write about something personal. Once I figured out what I wanted to write, organizing my essay was challenging. The structure of my paper was all over the place! Even after reading over all the assignments that was assigned during those two weeks, I still didn’t grasp the concept of formatting and organizing my essay. Instead of me embracing a new way or writing, I prefer to stick to free-writing and then spend hours trying to organize my thoughts on several pieces of paper. Submitting a draft first to the professor is very much helpful. My professor took the time to comment when needed and gave advice how to make your essay better. Also, when we attend his classes, he made time to give everyone a one on one counseling if needed to help you improve your writing techniques. That’s when I learned to start off with making topics for what I want to talk about in each paragraph. Once I had my topics, it helped me to stay on track with each specific paragraph that I was discussing. My professor was a motivator because there were plenty of times I wanted to give up but his words of encouragement and wisdom kept me motivated to going until the end. One thing that I would like to change when dealing with my professor is spending at least an hour reviewing the basics of grammar. This is a basic WRTG 101 and I really thought that the hybrid class would have been more beneficial for me because I have been out of school for so long. Even though we had homework with you tube videos, books, and very good websites that we can read and teach ourselves; an hour in class would have been good to have as well going over grammar. The first couple of weeks were not what I expected but I learned enough to make it through and able to proof-read my own work but not as good as my professor. Eventually I will be there. School became even more challenging as the weeks have gone by. Researching and citing material was something new to me. This was my first time ever learning how use cite within an essay. Many years ago, the only requirement for researching a paper was the reference. We were not required to cite any words from the article, book, or website; just a list of references at the end of the essay. Discovering how to I was required to add reference material used while researching my essay. Much closer to the end of the semester I had to use a different approach for the

My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. Ever since I was a child I wanted to help people and didn’t realize how, until I stepped foot in my 7th grade science class. The day still replays in my mind like it was yesterday. I was walking into a new school, with new people, and I felt like the last leaf stuck on the tree, waiting to fall in place where I belonged, but oddly enough, this one basic anatomy and physiology class made me feel welcomed. What made me feel welcomed wasn’t really the teacher or the students in there, but the environment of that particular branch of science. What was so amazing about that side of science was there was always more to learn and more importantly you were learning about yourself.…

I joined the military right out of high school, completed my training and spent the next few years working towards being the best in my field of expertise, which I accomplished by working long and hard hours. In those days we lived by the motto, "work hard, play hard", I look back and it seems that I may have taken this too literally, as time seems to have flown by.
