April, 2015: My grandpa passed away from cirrhosis of the liver about 1 ½ years ago. This happened to him because he was an alcoholic during his life, he became very bloated and swelled up from water in his stomach that his liver couldn't process. It was hard seeing him like that. It was also a very hard time for my family, because two brothers that were close friends, almost family to us passed away not that long before my grandpa passed away. When we were putting pictures on posters, it was interesting hearing stories and seeing pictures of my grandpa when he was in the Air force and throughout his life. It didn't hit me that he was gone until the funeral when they played Tapps. It's been very different since he passed away and sometimes I even forget he did pass away. Especially when I wake up and go down the stairs in the morning at my grandparents house and not seeing him playing on the computer and say good morning to me …show more content…
At first I thought I had to drive right when my instructor picked me up, but I was relieved when I found out I had to wait because another girl was driving. But soon enough it was my turn, I got more nervous as I was sitting in the driver's seat waiting for the instructor to buy lotto tickets at a store in South Marquette. When he returned he told me I had to back up out of the parking spot we were in. I thought great, i didn't know how to back up. But I tried to remember to check all the mirrors and to turn the wheel the right way. I was so nervous, I kept on messing up and other people were trying to get in and out of the parking lot, that my instructor had to use his emergency brake a couple of times. Finally, we got onto the street and I drove along Lake Superior and Marquette. After a while I felt more comfortable driving, but I was still a little nervous. Soon enough though, I felt like I was able to drive alone. I had mastered the art of "defensive driving"- it's a shame it took me getting into a minor accident to actually understand it, but I'm glad it was a lesson I actually learned instead of just having it go in through one ear and out the other as it had the first time. I'm now quite confident in my driving abilities, and if I'm not, I take the long way around. Better safe than sorry when it comes to…

After five hours under Mrs. Gonzalez’s 1997 Plymouth, my hands were so dirty I had to wash them ten times just to see my fingernails again. She was a familiar face around the shop, given that neighborhood thieves had routinely targeted her car. This time, though, they had gone too far. Someone had crawled underneath the car and cut out the valuable catalytic converter, and she couldn’t afford a replacement. When I looked at her and said, “That’ll be $563,” her face turned pale.…

The lead up to my birthday was spent with me constantly reminding my parents about acquiring a driver’s permit, but was almost always shot down and told that I would not be getting it anytime soon. In my parent’s eyes, I was too much of a distraction while they drove, always showing them the latest picture on social media or changing the radio station and not actually paying attention to their “useful” tips while on the road. “How was it my fault for showing them a funny picture or not listening to them?” , I thought to myself.…

I found that the most challenging task that I had to accomplish up to this point of my life was learning to drive. So my dad decided to take me out driving in parking lots. The thing he didn't figure though was that in his day parking lots were kept open after closing hours and didn't have the kiosk at the entrance/exit to get in. Nowadays many parking lots are gated off after certain hours and since I was busy on weekends we had go at night during the week. Since we didn't have time to drive all the way to the valley, we tried a car wash, a park — anywhere we could find an empty lot, but the car wash went out of business almost immediately, so when the driving instructor from AAA (for my mandatory requirement of professional training for 10 hours) with asked me to drive in the street I was terrified. I had to learn how to turn the wheel properly and where all the buttons in the car were (since we were using their car).…
