Personal Narrative: Do I Have To? My Introduction To The Boy Scouts

Great Essays
Do I Have To? My Introduction to the Boy Scouts I was your typical teenager. It was seventh grade year, your normal thirteen year old and unlike some of my classmates not very social. I would rather be on the couch (even to this day). One of those most positive experiences of my teenagers was joining the Boy Scouts. Peers and friends of mine, although, did not have a positive opinion about the Boy Scouts. Little did I know, my teenage years would be changed by this club. My mother had quite the different view and mine would change quickly as well. I reluctantly went with my mom to open house at my middle school that September night. Every middle school dreads open house with the parent, and I was no different. The club tables, as always were set up in the cafeteria. We passed the Boy Scout table, and a friend of my mom’s was sitting at it. She had been trying to get me for years to join either the Boy or Cub Scouts. “Would you be interested in joining the Boy Scouts this year?” Kathy one of the assistant scoutmasters asked. My heart sank. Every year I went through this. She would ask, my mom would ask me, and I would say “No.” I almost joined once, until I went to the meeting. I was raised to be disciplined and responsible. I remember the meeting like it was yesterday. The …show more content…
It was a cool, crisp and your general typical October weather. We left on a Friday for the Battle Creek Sportsmen’s Club. It was a weekend I haven’t forgot about to this day. It was cold, rainy, there were even hints of snow in the air that weekend. Meteorologically speaking the weather was miserable for a typical mid-October weekend. The weather was not the only factor to be noted. The other factor was that this location was right next to where the Conrail trains depart from. Friday night, I could not sleep well and counted fifteen freight trains pass the campsite. Despite these negatives, I tried to suck it up and have an enjoyable

From growing up in a military family, I have become very resilient and I adapt really well to change. With my surroundings changing all the time, I have to be able to quickly adapt to my new setting and find ways to fit in as quickly as possible. I have been to about twelve different schools so far, and I have lived in about eight different houses. When I live on a military base, change is constant, even if it is not my own family experiencing the orders to move that year. The houses around me fill and empty all the time with new people, and some of the military dominant schools I have been to have the same problem.…

But the help of my mom I figured out that helping the community is easier than I thought. My idea for my Christian service hours was to join Jack and Jill of America. It is a leadership and community service group for African-American children within the Twin Cities. I just got done with my shift to protect Camp Half-Blood feeling very tired and stressed. With the camp’s protection being down and most of the campers going back to their families for the summer, this meant that there were very few of us to guard our safe haven. Not to mention I was still recovering from my broken ankle. I decided to take a walk down to the beach near the camp. Lately, I’ve found the sound of crashing waves, wind brushing through my hair, and the slight smell of salt hitting my face very soothing ever since I had met my best friend, Percy Jackson.…

Slowly, I took on more responsibility positions both in and out of Scouting, imparting my own amazing experience in Philmont onto the younger scouts and leading my fellow students as co-founder of Sustainability Club. Following my contributions in the Pancake Breakfast, I took a year-long hiatus from Scouting to focus on my studies, taking multiple AP classes to help supplement my interests. After the impromptu break, when I rejoined and revisited the enjoyment I experienced from my Philmont trek, I affirmed myself as a Scout for life, as I saw the positive influence the program had on me and knew that Scouting could guide me to become a better citizen of the community. Largely responsible for introducing me to my leadership abilities and individual morals, Scouting has shaped my character through my experiences with…

Boys Scouts of Americas has come under heavy scrutiny about its ban to allow openly gay scouts into the organization and has finally decided to lift it. In a statement by Wayne Perry, BSA President, he said “While people have different opinions about this policy, we can all agree that kids are better off when they are scouting.” The decision to lift the ban was a move in the right direction towards progression and acceptance. Originally, W.D. Boyce founded Boys Scouts of America (or BSA) in 1910, as part of the international scout movement.…
