Personal Narrative: Derby Middle School

Decent Essays
I moved from San Diego, California to Derby, Kansas in the summer of 2017. I joined Derby Middle School, I hadn’t been to a real middle school before, even though I was in seventh grade. I was in online schooling with K-12 at home. I was new to multiple classes and teachers, assignments on paper, and I was new to a lot of people around me.

When I joined Derby Middle School, I thought of it like nothing, thinking that no effort would get me through the year, I thought that my grades didn’t matter as long as I get C or higher. I didn’t realize how much my grades would affect the rest of my life. I didn’t know that it would change my income, my job, and my personality.

I didn’t care about school overall, I just wanted to be in and out, everything

It was a normal Tuesday at good ol’ Freeburg Community High School. Our rambunctious lunch group sat around the table to enjoy the lunch of the day, chili. Now you see, I had brought my lunch, but I wasn’t allowing that stop me from enjoying a steaming bowl of chili. My bowl of chili warmed my hands, heart, stomach, my esophagus when it was occasionally too hot, and eventually my lap. Between all of the jokes and laughter I hadn’t noticed that my hands were shaking a tad more than normal; if I had noticed, I would have done the smart thing and set my bowl down rather than hold it.…

Before attending Wilmington Early College High School (WECHS), I was not satisfied with my personality, nor was I happy with the way I was perceived by other people. Most would think that I should have been confident because in middle school I was in the AIG program. However, I never truly felt satisfied with myself. I always got good grades, but I never felt like I earned good grades. Although I was making straight As and Bs, it was always relatively easy to earn those marks in middle school.…

The summer between my sophomore year and junior year was a life changing period. For one, my mother and I moved to Waco, Texas, an 8-hour drive from my home of Weslaco. Along with this new address, I also had a new school. Naturally, I went to the school nearest my home, Connally High School. “Don’t forget, the paper is due next Wednesday!” My 8th period teacher, Mrs. Oakford told to my class and I as we streamed out of the cramped classroom on a Friday. We couldn’t wait to bust out of the schools doors and claim our prize of a short freedom for surviving another busy, exhausting, and slow week of middle school. I rushed to my locker, grabbed everything I would need for the homework due Monday, threw it in my bag and headed down the hall collecting my friends to walk to town to start what I would hope would be a slow but fun weekend off The weekend went quicker than I wished and before I knew it, it was late Sunday night and I still hadn’t done my homework, I realized this and got to work.…

In the seventh grade, I faced a large transition in life. The previous year I had experienced middle school for the first time, but I would make that entrance again. I moved from Texas to North Dakota, where seventh grade was the first year of middle school. I tried a lot of new things that year, mainly wrestling.…

I was afraid to sharpen a pencil in second grade. My most vivid elementary school memories spring from instances when I was being reprimanded by an adult for doing something wrong. I did everything in my power to avoid those dreadful moments, but they still presented themselves on occasion. Even now I feel a pit in my stomach when I recall the way I felt during those times, regardless of the fact that almost all of them would easily roll off my back if they occurred today.…

From the very beginning of school and throughout the years, every student struggles and has their ups and downs. I distinguished that it was time for me to take education seriously when high school was right around the corner. My childhood was typically running around the whole neighborhood with friends and sometimes causing mischief. Although, when it came to school, I just wanted to run away and isolate myself from the world.…
