The redemption of Mother Nature’s liveliness from the laziness of winter marks the beginning of spring. On a joyful spring day, my Mother deemed it appropriate to begin the annual cleaning of the cramped living structure attached to our motel, which we proudly called “home.” During the tedious process of re-organizing my room, I found a dusty briefcase containing many aged, crippled documents and a beautiful framed picture of my Mother. My 9-year-old self was in a perplexed state as I re-gazed at the picture in awe when my Mother told me that the “picture” was actually a drawing created by a local villager in India. This moment sparked an inextinguishable desire within me to create realistic artwork using the minimal art media that I had. …show more content…
Pandher, revealed a dentist’s complex niche of serving others in the light of creativity to me. I vividly remember one case in which she treated an elderly woman patient who was dealing with excruciating pain localized in her lower lateral and central incisors. A slightly different approach was applied to the extraction of each tooth to ensure proper removal and optimal comfort for the patient. During the follow-up of her treatment, the patient described how she could not fathom the extent to which Dr. Pandher was able to treat her pain so perfectly and said she would be “eternally thankful for her treatment.” I was fortunate enough to experience similar interactions when I volunteered at Christ Child House, a non-profit organization that helps disadvantaged youth in the Greater Detroit Area. Many of the boys here have been through serious abuse and neglect, adding to their emotional distress. As a result, each child must be communicated with in a specific way to ensure that they can begin a new meaningful life. The blissful smiles of joy that I was able to bring upon these children after a simple chat or short game of pick-up basketball will forever adhere to my …show more content…
Dentists have the power to evoke similar feelings in the community that they serve. I elicited such feelings when I helped assemble and deliver lunches to the homeless with Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity. Seeing the reactions of these people after handing them a simple sandwich made me realize how greatly some people have to struggle to attain things that most take for granted. The warmth radiating from their eyes, their simple “thank-yous,” and contagious hopeful smiles filled me with a sense of indescribable joy. This moment made me understand the magnitude of impact that I could have on an underprivileged community as a

Have you lived (for three years or more) in communities which are medically underserved, or where the majority of the population is economically and/or educationally disadvantaged? My family immigrated to the United States when I was five years old. We are originally from a rural town in India where people do not have access to adequate healthcare services. Poverty continues to prevail in these communities, and children often do not have the financial resources to pursue higher education.…

Several years ago, when I was a brand new nurse’s aide, I had an experience with a dying patient that changed my perspective completely. I was scheduled to be a 1:1 companion with her for a 12 hour shift. The lady had received the news the day before that she most likely not live more than another week or two. And she was very much at peace with this, when talking to throughout my shift I inquired how she could be so calm and collected. She told me that death was just the next step.…

Traditionally, the dental profession and the medical profession were perceived as two separate entities, however, this bifurcated health system has created an epidemic in oral disease with our aging population (Nagro, 2016). In 1840, when the first dental school in the world opened, it was suggested that dental courses should be added to the medical curriculum, however, this proposal was rejected. This reminds us of the ongoing disparity between the medical and dental profession (Beck, 2017).…

This is a biannual event which I am able to attend only the events in October. On October 2015, I volunteered as a dental assistant in restorative dentistry where I assisted other volunteer dentists in amalgam procedures. On October 2016, I volunteered as a volunteer sterilizer, where I utilized my multi-tasking ability to ensure dentists have clean instruments available at all time. The speed and efficiency of the entire clinic depend on our work and preparations as a team. Both years were two days shifts, including optional shadowing that I participated before my actual shifts.…

I inspire to be many things, mainly having a philosophy of serving others in the field of health care, I believe we should form a symbiotic relationship as professional health provider, making it our obligation to not only understand the symptom but the social effects and developing possible cure; supporting and strengthening our existing institution while providing a better quality of life. I acquire these values nearly three decades ago, where I had the opportunity to volunteer in my community at the local church on Staten Island. As you know the church can serve a community in many special and unique ways, from tutoring the youth, to transitioning young adults into first time parenthood, as well as, assisting the community with entitlement programs. One of the major anxieties and financial struggles in my community were families managing a loved one with multiple-infirmities. This is when I began to see the church as much more than a place…

Overall, I think that Dr. Kevorkian was doing nothing but his job. With approval from Mr. Youk’s closest family members, I do not see how this procedure could have affected anyone else besides the small party involved. Although an observer may not have agreed with Dr. Kevorkian’s specific line of work, unless it is them or their family member who is ill, I do not see how anyone should have a right to voice their opinion to the point where it causes legal action such as confinement- when no felony has taken place. Nonetheless, the only objection I had when reading this case was the fact that Michigan law stated there wasn't allowance of assisted suicide; however, I do not know the back story with why this procedure couldn't have been moved over…
