My right foot slams on the brakes as my ears register the sound of metal on metal. I throw my car into reverse, before jumping out to assess the damage. An otherwise pristine, navy blue BMW is blemished, two chips of paint missing to reveal the white plaster underneath. Acutely aware of the crowded parking lot, I revert to autopilot, parking my car with the careful precision I had not employed since my license test six months earlier. I slowly crawl out of my car to peek at the scratch one more time. Unfortunately, it had not magically disappeared. The driver did not seem to be around anywhere, so I began to frantically search my car for any scrap piece of paper I could find and scribbled down a note with my number, an apology, and a promise to pay the resulting expense. Making sure it was secured under the windshield wiper, I hurried off to my destination trying to keep the tears at bay. …show more content…
I was adamant that I did not need to tell my parents I had gotten into my first accident, hoping that in twenty years or so when I finally told them it could be something we would all laugh about. I had fifteen hundred dollars in a savings account that I could pull from. Insurance did not necessarily have to get involved; I could just pay out of pocket. My parents would never have to know. Besides, according to Google, the worst case scenario would only cost me the five-hundred-dollar deductible. Unfortunately, life likes to throw curveballs even Google cannot

When I realized what had happened I started to sweat bullets and my friends had such a shocked and mortified expression that it just made me more terrified. I backed the car up and went outside with the others to see the damage that the crash had caused and I almost wish I had not gotten out. The whole front bumper of the car seemed broken and I felt my hopes of it being “just a scratch” crash and burn inside me. We parked the car near the gas station to try and see what we could do to fix it which was almost nothing. The manager of the station even came outside and told us “just put it in the trunk and go!”…

In the book, World War Z, by Max Brooks, a character, Jacob Nyathi, recalls a time when he was hospitalized and pumped full of drugs, which kept him from having to confront the reality of his situation, specifically an outbreak of “African rabies” in Cape Town. Through his drug haze, Nyathi overheard voices arguing about the situation and in retrospect says, “It’s funny, I go over that conversation all the time in my head, what I should have thought, felt, done. It was a long time before I sobered up again, before I woke up and faced the nightmare” (32). Like Nyathi, I have also avoided facing reality. One time, I didn’t want to face having to tell my parents that I high centered one of their vehicles.…

For thirty minutes, I sat down in my computer chair in my room and tried to relax as much as possible. I turned off my phone, all of the lights, and made sure that I was going to be uninterrupted for the allotted time that I would be trying this out. Once I got comfortable, sitting up right, I began focusing on how I was going to meditate. I had never done this before; and maybe the closest thing that I have ever got to meditating was daydreaming. So that is what I began doing.…

It was the summer of 2007, and my parents thought that it would be a brilliant idea to go on a family road trip to some unknown location. This was the summer before I started high school and I wasn’t in the family bonding mood for a day let alone two weeks. With me being an only child, grandchild, and great grandchild, I was the only kid with five adults in a minivan. Why my parents thought that this was a good idea is still beyond my imagination.…
