Personal Narrative: AP Chemistry

“Everyone fails, but what sets you apart is what you choose to do with that failure”. Those are the words my chemistry teacher, Mr. Petras told me when I failed my chemistry honors final. Chemistry is not a subject that comes easily to me. I had a very difficult time with it in the last quarter of my sophomore year, and did terribly on the final exam; I had received a 66 percent. I did so poorly that it brought my grade down to a B for the year. That was my first B and my lowest grade in my high school career. I was mortified and didn’t want to take AP Chem anymore. I thought to myself, if I did so poorly in an honors chem class, then AP chem is going to be a nightmare. I took AP Chemistry regardless, as I wanted to challenge myself and overcome this failure. …show more content…
Near the end of the year, we took our final exam which consisted of two parts: the free response section, and the multiple choice section. This is when I started to worry, afraid that the same thing would happen and I would fail. We took the free response section first and got the results. I could tell that I had gotten a very low score by the way Mr. Petras looked at me. I walked into the room to see him laughing, but as soon as he saw me, a grim look settled on his face. I saw him taking a deep breath as he shuffled around for my paper. As he was leafing through the pile of tests, I could see that mine was near the bottom. My heart sank when he pulled out my paper and said that I needed to do really well on the Multiple choice in order to get a good score, otherwise I would fail the final exam. He had told me that I would fail multiple times in life, but what will set me apart from others is how I respond to that failure. That day was very tough for me, but I didn’t give up; I went home and decided I would overcome

Throughout my school career everything was pretty easy. I never had any homework, the work was not very difficult and I could do it on my own. Not in AP chemistry. AP Chemistry is the class you take because regular chemistry was easy enough and you really didn’t want to take biology or anatomy. Besides, most of my friends signed up for the course so why not join them?…

One of my largest commitments, Science Club, hosts a Science Bowl competition yearly in the fall. Competitions require hundreds of hours of preparation and execution. In order to run the competition smoothly as head coordinator I am in charge of delegating and carrying out the multitude of tasks to be completed. While the preparation may be done perfectly, many problems arise quickly on tournament day, and I am responsible for solving them swiftly. Because of the skills and coordination required for the event, my ability as a leader to think decisively and act quickly while still taking into account the concerns of other volunteers has helped me greatly.…

The exam was passed around for everyone to look at and copy down the answers. The exam came to me; I held it in my hand and contemplated doing as the rest of my classmates were doing. Suddenly, it was as if my dad were standing over me saying “having integrity will not always be easy to do; there will be times in your life I’m sure that you will be faced with situations that will test your integrity, but it’s up to YOU to choose what to do.” After thinking about my Dad, and what he had said; it was as if that paper was hot as a fire; I quickly passed it on to a classmate that was anxiously waiting to copy…

I worked like a dog, shutting out outside media, no extracurricular activities, all work no play, however even at my highest ability I failed in my mission to bring my grade up to what I assumed it could be. When I understood that trying to elevate that failing class was a dud, I switched to my more powerful or stronger classes to see if they can cover for the mistakes made in another class. In this process, it made a dramatic difference not enough to for me to get my acquired grade. In the end, I had failed my first class ever with a…

This was the worst I have ever felt in my math career since I was not performing at my fullest potential and I knew I could do way better. I’m not very confident in my science knowledge or skills, but I think I have enough to succeed. I have a stronger understanding of biology than any other discipline of science, as I did biology and life science classes in year 11 and 12 in preparation for nursing. Through this I learnt about disease and the immune system, cell division, natural selection, and human and plant systems. If we did any science in primary school, I don’t have any memory of it. We did not do any science investigations or experiments since most of our work for every subject was book-based and involved creationism for science due to the school’s denomination.…

Zaputil had a great quote: “this too shall pass” which illustrate the importance of acceptance, hard work and consistency even if the wanted results are not yet met. For a person to succeed they must know that the road to success is not always downhill, but instead is full of obstacles and failure. I recall trying very hard on my Biology lab reports and receiving low grades, which was frustrating but I kept working hard and it didn’t turn me down.…
