Personal Narrative: A Hero's Life

Great Essays
I once knew a boy named William. He came from a rundown neighborhood full of violence, gangs and drugs. When his mother was pregnant with him, his father left. Unfortunately, William never met his father. His mother works two jobs to support the two of them. Aside from working all the time, she sits at home and abuses multiple substances. Her main addiction is crack cocaine. Unfortunately when she’s not working, she’s high. Due to these reasons, William and his mother, Margaret do not spend much time together. On top of problems at home and living in a bad neighborhood, William doesn’t do the greatest in school. Throughout grade school, he already gets in fights and fails classes. William is not off to a good start in life. By the time William is thirteen years old, his mind was set on money, drugs, and sex. This mindset corrupted William in more ways than a thirteen year old boy should have been corrupted. He starts to hang out with bad people who are nothing but bad influences. He starts selling drugs, fighting more in school, skipping school, hustling money, and stealing from others. At only thirteen years old, he’s well known around the neighborhood as a heavy drug dealer. Unfortunately, his mother is still a crack addict and does nothing to support William other than provide food, shelter, and some clothing. Nothing seems to be going right in William’s life, but he doesn’t care. This lifestyle is what he wants. By the age of fifteen he dropped out of high school in order to sell drugs. …show more content…
At this point, he becomes so invested and involved he gets tied up with gangs. William was a young boy, but by no means did he have any fears. When he got involved with one specific gang, The Devil’s Angels, the members take complete advantage of him. They know he’ll do anything and everything and not think twice. They send him on different jobs that the rest of the members don’t want to do. Even though he did jobs for the gang and was highly associated with them, he still wasn’t into the gang yet. In order to be initiated, he had to do something big. Something William has never done before… One day he goes over to the gang leader’s house with the rest of the members. He goes inside and they all immediately start smoking and drinking. The leader, Natas, approaches William with a very serious look on his face. “You ready B” asks Natas. “Ready for what” replies William. “It’s time for you to perform your initiation.” “Really? I’m ready. Anything for my brothers” replies William with confidence. “You want in, you gotta do something that other men are scared to do. We need to know that you’re all in and willing to risk lock up for your brothers.” “I don’t care what it is, i’ll do anything.” William is now sitting on the edge of his seat. He’s been waiting for this moment since the beginning of his affiliation. He finally has his chance and he’s not gonna let it slip through his fingers. “If you want in, you have to rape and kill a woman” explains Natas. William looks at Natas. He knows that he could end up in prison for many years if he gets caught. He doesn’t care. All he wants is to be in the gang. To him, that’s all that matters. “That’s it?” replies William. “That’s baby food. When we doin this.” …show more content…
They still do their old things because it’s a way of life for them. Drugs, violence, theft, everything. It’s all they know. Some say William was better of dead. What he was getting into was something you can’t get out of except through death. Unfortunately, William died a young age due to the events leading up to his death that led him down the wrong road in life. William’s story is one that was never spread. That’s why i’m here, to spread awareness. People need to know the danger and intensity of these gangs and their actions. It’s a big deal and young boys should not be involved nor should they have to go through what William did. William’s story is one-hundred percent true. I should know. I was there. And I raped his mom

Joseph Campbell, the creator of the hero’s journey, did a lot of research on ancient mythology. He discovered that many heroes travel the same paths to becoming a hero. Campbell decided that heroes come across many challenges that are put into stages and in those stages the hero grows closer to the reward at the end. I am definitely not a hero, but my journey of finding Christ and giving my life to him has absolutely made me into a better person overall. The real villain of this city was the blistering wind that rolled in from the bay. It was invasive and suffocating. Too much had happened last Christmas for me to consider it a “joyous” time.…
