Personal Narrative: A Career As A Personal Care Assistant

Improved Essays
As I entered my senior year of undergrad, I began looking for an opportunity to work with people requiring any form of health care assistance. Luckily, I came across an opening for a Personal Care Assistant (PCA) position in the school newspaper. At the time, I didn’t know exactly what a PCA was, but I knew I wanted to work one-on-one with patients, and this job would allow me to do exactly that. After I went through all the training that was required, it was finally time to meet my client. The only details my supervisor told me about my client were: his name, that I would be assisting in driving him around in his handicap accessible van, getting him dressed, monitoring him during his walking exercises, and that he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy as a child and was bound to a wheelchair.

Confidentiality laws prohibit me from disclosing the name of my client, but for the sake of this essay, I will refer to him as GG. At first, our interactions were a little awkward,

GG’s experiences were a bit different than the potential psychological issues that I knew I would likely experience as a Chiropractor. However, it made me realize that developing the skills to spot potential cases of psychosomatic pain or realizing that a patient is suffering from depression would give me an advantage over others in my profession.

I worked as a PCA for a little over a year, and I couldn’t possibly put into words all the lessons that I learned during that time. Prior to working with GG I knew that I wanted to enter the field of healthcare, but it wasn’t until afterwards that I knew I was capable of doing so. Moreover, it was a truly humbling experience, and I will utilize this knowledge in order to provide better care for my future

There is no science to my madness; I keep it simple when it comes to organizing my day, or reminding me of an appointment. My calendar app on my phone is the only way I keep up with my busy schedule. When adding to my calendar I make sure I have a brief description that reminds me of what I have to accomplish. Usually, for appointments I have scheduled I set a reminder for that morning to inform me about upcoming appointments for that day, so I am better aware of my day. As I mentioned in my introduction, I am a Dental Assistant in the Army, and I see multiple patients on a daily basis.…

If a client came in to see me at a social service center needing a place to stay, my first step would be to engage the client by establishing a professional relationship with them. This means making sure that the client understands that while I will care about them, the purpose of the relationship is to work together and equip them to address problems in their life. From there we would establish why they believe that they are seeing a social worker and begin to form a plan from there. Secondly, we would begin to analyze their strengths in their current situation to determine a path of action.…

This ethical study will define a particular class-based conflict that I have experienced in the workplace as a caseworker for a foster care service in Harlem. In one particular case, I had a conflict of interest with a particular client that felt that I did not thoroughly understand their circumstances in terms of class status. The client assumed that I was too “well-off” to understand the life of poverty tht had created so many problems in her life. However, the client was unaware that I had also grown up being “poor” as an African American. More so, I had been fortunate enough to get a good education at a prestigious university and raise myself out of poverty.…

This time gave me an opportunity to undertake reflective listening through active listening which according to Rogers (1975) in his “client-centered” therapy argues that it encourages the client to share the information in more depth than if I was only asking directive questions. This enabled me to gain information when the client brought out the underlying issues including those that I had not thought about. The active listening also improved my relationship with the client since I was able to express acceptance by avoiding any expression of disagreement or judgement thus making him open up and also trust me as his couselor. This method also left me with enough time to explore and diagnose the issue thus noting the new ways of approach to the…
