Personal Mini Exercises

For my second personal mini experiment, I chose an exercise from chapter ten that is labeled “Searching for Absorption: Finding Flow in Your School Day.” I chose this personal mini experiment because, with all the technology that is readily available and open for us to use it can be quite difficult finding time to actually sit down to do homework without interruptions. The experiment consists of taking a break from all screen time for two days so, this means no television, and no Internet surfing or instant messaging is allowed during this time period. Day one consisted of me placing my phone on mute and do not disturb mode, only allowing emergency calls or repeated calls from family members through. Secondly, I gathered up all of my due homework and made a list organizing my top priorities, I also put into consideration what tasks would require the use of a computer and I put an estimation of the amount of time I should spend on the internet for these specified tasks. I do not own an actual television however; I made it a point to log out from all my Netflix, Hulu and Amazon video accounts, thus eliminating …show more content…
I finally sat down and read over chapters that I have needed to give attention to as well as, completing small minute tasks for all of my four courses for the fall semester. After the third hour I was impressed by how much I had actually completed, I checked the time and took a 30-minute break. In conclusion, after finishing my break I then grabbed my list and checked off all of my completed tasks, I was very happy indeed all the tasks that did not involve the use of a home computer had been completed. I then gathered all my notes I had written previously and complied them into a study guide that would make sense; I ended my studying for day

    1. The media I use the most is television, while print is my least used form of media. This is what I had expected, since I rarely feel the desire to sit down and just read during the school year, I’d rather watch several television episodes. Relaxing on my bed or couch watching TV or Netflix sounds like a more enjoyable evening, instead of sitting at my desk reading boring textbooks for physics. Plus, I traveled home this weekend and all of my recorded shows were ready to be watched, since there is no DVR on the television in my dorm, therefore I had to view them before they’d be deleted.…

In a guided self-assessment of study habits and strategies, ED 3100 students have been challenged to embark on a journey of self-exploration in an effort to better understand our own learning processes, as well as determine how different methods of studying and learning may affect our overall success. Dr. Demars (2015) explains that exploration and knowledge of our own techniques and learning strategies will then empower us, as future educators, to facilitate the same attributes in our students. She emphasizes that the better we (as teachers) understand our own learning processes, the better we can understand those of our students, and consequently help them self-assess to achieve a better understanding of their own learning. Although this exploration has raised many questions for me, there were key themes that stood out amongst others. By constructing an unbiased system of measurement, I am experimenting with deliberate and strategic changes to my study habits that are explicitly designed to address and correct weaknesses in my current study habits that I will track over a period of four weeks.…

In part one of “How to Become a Straight-A Student” by Cal Newport the main of this story is how to not to work and study for twelve hours straight, to show how to manage your time doing some simple things and help you avoid the urge of procrastination. The five ideas that resonated with me was making a “To Do List” and a “Things to Remember Column”, to feed my body with nutrients, tell others of your work and go to an area where there is no one you know, plan the hard days in advance, and to study at least an hour straight and to rest from time to time. Making a to do list resonated with me because it showed how easy your day can be with this idea. Just like in the story of Stephen, Newport said that “Stephen was able to really relax and have a good time at night. ”(Newport, )…

As the season of fall approaches here at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, I have reached the middle of my fall semester as a freshmen college student. Midterms are approaching and I am pulling my hair out due to the sleepless nights and long hours of studying for midterms. There are some students are planning activities for Halloween while I on the other hand am preparing my study guide for my Microeconomic midterm. The closest to a break I would have from school would be Thanksgiving break, and during the break I would return home and begin working for my family. All the stress I am feeling about school could be due to my unorganized school schedule and responsibility of renting an apartment.…

College Success Skills #2 At the beginning of this semester, my main goal was to work on my habit of procrastination. I wanted to manage my time better with the use of a planner and make myself sit down and do my homework or study ahead of time so that I wouldn’t be as stressed out and could have time to have fun with friends without worrying about an assignment or test. At first I was doing an okay job, but soon I found myself falling back into my old habits.…

My Motivation: What motivates me the most to pursue a college degree is that I will be the first person in my family to receive one. My grandmother is the backbone behind this motivation because she was always making sure that academics came first in my life. There was rarely a day that I would come home and she would not ask me questions about my homework, asking what I learned in school, or even looked over my homework. As I got older, she made sure I was a part of a college prep program called AVID from 6th-12th grade and that definitely made a difference for me. It helped me understand the importance of continuing your education and how beneficial it can be to succeeding in life.…

I would say that I learned the most about what it really means to have time management after this semester. Entering my first semester of college I had blind faith in the University, and myself because I believe everything would just work out and I would pass because it was meant to be. However, fate and hope are no the things to help you life as a new college student. The drive to wake up, attend class, finish homework, and accept the new responsibility that had been placed in my novice hands diminished greatly as the non-academic temptations became to creep in my head. I must be honest with you and let you know that I did cave and willingly participate in the sweet release of social experiences.…

Discussion Question #4 After taking the time management survey offered by Mind Tools (2016a), I was able to see that I am presently managing my time very effectively; however, there are a few areas in which I can make improvements. The first area in which I should make adjustments is prioritization. What this quiz helped me realize is that while I always make “to-do” lists, I do not organize the order of tasks that I aim to complete by importance or priority. Often times when I have a long list of tasks needing to be accomplished, I will start first on the items that are easier to take on or do not require as much effort, even though they are nonessential or not time-sensitive.…

Before I began my Freshman Development Seminar course with Professor Furet, I believed that this class would not be of good use to me. The reason for this was because of my beliefs in self-teaching myself to learn the basics with additional help from other sources. However, it did not turn out the way I wanted it to be. Therefore, I had to pay to get taught what I could have done on my own, at least that is what I convinced myself then and there. Throughout my class sessions with Ms. Furet, I learned more than I could have ever imagined.…
