If someone asked me if I could live without any music for one year, I would answer no. Music adds a little color to my everyday life in college and at home. I listen a variety of different genres which alters depending on the mood I am in. Whether it’s singing in the ladies’ ensemble, learning a new instrument, or listening to my favorite artists during my strolls, music has always played an essential part in my life. During my senior year of high school I joined the ladies’ ensemble. Besides mumbling “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” once with a class of forty students in elementary school, I had no singing experience. The ladies’ ensemble consisted of four students; Teddi (soprano), Ricole (soprano), Iole (soprano), and I (bass). I enjoyed being the foundation of all the music that we rehearsed and performed together. However, I dreamed of singing a solo by myself, and the state singing competition at Emery High School gave that opportunity. Confidence never deemed to be my strong suite in life, however, achieving a “superior” rank for my solo Danny Boy helped life my spirits. I am less anxious now when I sing and perform in front of people. In addition to voice lessons, I also took piano …show more content…
I really have developed a liking for new and developing artists, such as Courtney Barnes and Bishop Briggs. Courtney Barnes is a folk-rock artist that has only been active in the music industry since 2015. Like a fanfare in classical music, his song Fire never loses power with its fearless percussion and prominent guitar. Sarah Grace McLaughlin also known as Bishop Briggs, is an indie-pop that has also only have been active in this music industry since 2015. Her song “River” is only half as fast a “Fire”, but still delivers in performance and sound. Both of these artists and songs, give me energy and confidence which is why I listen to them more frequently than other artists.

For the last two years, I have contributed to my Advanced Women’s Show Choir’s success as a performer and as a dance captain. My talent as a dancer and my ability to quickly learn choreography led to my selection as dance captain. This leadership role requires me to be a responsible person, a patient teacher and a supportive team member. Being a part of a nationally top-ranked show choir, I know the requirements of my role, and I was always thrilled to be selected as a dance captain during my junior and senior years. As dance captain, I schedule and lead dance sectionals, helping the girls review the choreography from previous rehearsals.…

I chose Belk Library of Appalachian State University for my ethnography project. The reason that I pick library for this project was that I knew everyday men, women, children, elder, and people of different nation came to this place for studying, relaxing, or for some other reasons. Therefore, I thought by choosing library, I would have an opportunity to observe the behaviors of people of different genders, ages, and nation of this culture. Failure is not characterized by what is lost, but instead by the lessons one learns from the experience. An area of my life in which I’ve faced many struggles has been music. Ever since a young age, I have been truly passionate about music; from singing, to dancing, to playing piano and percussion. Nothing makes me happier than succeeding in something I care about, but often it is extremely difficult to achieve musical honors due to the exceptionally talented competition. Two years in a row, I failed to make the Iowa All-State Chorus.…

It was sixth grade, and I had just set the first and most significant long term goal of my lifetime. I was in the beginning choir class. Just as the bell rang to start the period, a line of fourteen high schoolers walked into the classroom. Impeccably dressed, confident, and impossibly cool, they were exactly what I hoped to be when I grew up. My choir teacher, Mrs. Gaddis, introduced them as Vocal Fusion, a pop a capella group at the high school, and explained that they would be performing a few pep rally songs.…

If the student applied the ethnographic interviewing techniques of listening and asking broad based questions, Mrs. McNeil may not have assumed a defensive or argumentative position with the student. During the interview the student asks questions that are to narrow and specific to Mrs. McNeil’s health status, residency and employment status, which upsets Mrs. McNeil. If broad based questions were asked, Mrs. McNeil could have had more control of the conversation and shared information that she felt conformable sharing with the student; the student could then ask follow up questions based on information shared by Mrs. McNeil instead of directing the conversation with specific questioning. Also, the student occasionally lacked the technique…

People have a tendency to learn different things for different reasons. Some individuals plan on becoming ballerinas and therefore must have knowledge on how to become more flexible and a basic understanding of motion to complete the stunts they do; however, for a person to become a professional photographer, the basis of knowledge has to be different. This goes for all professions. Although rugby and football appear similar, they each require some skill set or knowledge that the other has no use for. Learning different skills for no reason at all can be beneficial too.…

I learned the importance of spreading information in the Scottish Highlands. I was 15, the summer after my freshman year in high school when and my parents shipped me off to language summer camp. I was going to be the only American enrolled in the camp, the others coming from the UK, Spain, France, and Germany. I arrived jet lagged, in a place filled with rugged accents. I was worried I would be nowhere near as cosmopolitan or cultured as my multi-lingual fellow campers.…

When looking at the definition of folkway - a mode of thinking, feeling, or acting common to a given group of people or unspoken rules of society that guide our behavior every day – I immediately began to think about the many differences of the variation of people with which I work. I work in a medical office with 10 other females and 3 males. We have varying ages, religions, races, and vary in personalities drastically. For the most part, we are very close and all get along very well considering these vast differences. I consider myself an open book and I am very strong-willed and vocal.…

My educational background is an undergraduate degree in sociology. Through such an analytical framework, I was able to broaden my understanding of society and particularly the problems concerning labor. Through my academic development, I worked on a senior thesis that attempted to address how workers on the shop-floor attempted to deal with their day-to-day issues and their dealings with management. This thesis was unlike any other academic challenge I had faced.…

I am applying to the Geography undergraduate program because of my recent interest in human-land relationships. My main goal for applying to this department is to pursue a career in cartography. My dad and I go to this motorcycle museum in the hill-country where all walks of life go in the late winter/ early spring months because of the American food and the Aussie owner. One specimen I was lucky enough to speak with relived his glory days as a geoscientist in Greenland. We did not have much time to talk about specifics, but I did have time to ask how I could get in on that worldly experience action so I too could have KILLER stories to tell when I am old and gray/grey (he spells it with an e).…
