They go back to the Muck, and Tea Cake soon becomes sick. “Somethin’ got after me in mah sleep, Janie. Tried to choke me tuh death” (174). After being examined by the doctor, he suspects that Tea Cake acquired rabies from the dog bite. Janie is devastated because she also learns it is too late to save him, and Janie’s true love will most likely die. Janie feel as if Tea Cake dies, her life will most likely be over. “But to kill her through Tea Cake was too much to bear” (178). At this point Janie’s tree begins to lose all of its leaves and the trunk and branches become infested with termites. Mentally, Tea Cake becomes progressively unstable and she finds him in bed with a pistol. He tries to kill her, but three blank chambers come before a bullet. Janie has no choice but to kill Tea Cake before he can kill her. It is at this moment where Janie’s tree dies and falls over. After all she has been through, the different people and places, her tree is finally
