When I was four years old my mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. My life changed completely after her diagnosis. My dad abandoned us. We could not afford to live by ourselves, since my mother could not work. She was disabled from her neck down. Immediately, she was hospitalized. A medical social worker carefully explained her disease so that we could better understand it. She was kind and patient with our Spanish only speaking family. I will use the skills acquired through the program and my existing experience working with children since I was 16 years old, to help students whose families need additional resources to be successful in life. I am passionate about working and serving the community in which I grew up in. My strong interpersonal and communication skills will allow me to build strong relationships with students and their families so the child can be successful in school. I plan to be assertive, observant and carefully study non-verbal communication as well. My current job as an art instructor has given me the opportunity to get to know my students through their artwork. Yet, I feel I can do so much more as a social worker. I can reach more students beyond the four walls of my classroom. I will be able to use my organizational skills to keep track and document my student cases. I will also communicate effectively with teachers, school personnel so we can plan accordingly for students that need additional support.
