Perseus In Greek Mythology

Perseus and his stories have fascinated storytellers and scholars alike for centuries. This mythical man is a hero, born of a god and a mortal and he is credited with many brave and daring acts. Throughout his life, Perseus had an eventful infancy, killed Medusa, slayed a sea monster for his true love, and fulfilled a prophecy. Right from his birth, it was clear Perseus was destined for great things. An oracle told his grandfather, Acrisius, that he would be killed by his daughter’s child. Terrified at this thought, Acrisius locked his daughter, Danae, away so that she could not have a child. However, Zeus sent a golden shower to impregnate her, and she soon gave birth to her son, Perseus (Gill). In an attempt to save himself, Acrisius locked Danae and Perseus into a chest and threw them out into the sea (Regula). Zeus requested that Poseidon calm the waters so the mother and son would be safe (Cartwright). Soon the duo washed up on the island of Seriphus which was owned by a man named Polydectes (Gill). …show more content…
Polydectes wished to marry Danae and thought Perseus was in the way of his desires. Polydectes made a bet saying that if Perseus was able to kill Medusa, he would leave Danae alone. However, if Perseus failed, he would marry her. Perseus was eager to prove himself and took Polydectes up on the deal. Perseus was helped by Hermes and Athena who told him to speak with the wise Graeae. The Graeae used an eye to see and Perseus stole it from them. Perseus refused to give it back unless they told him where Medusa was. They complied Perseus was able to kill Medusa with his sword
