For this analysis, the artwork I selected a Volute Krater made in Greece during the 4th century B.C.E. The artist, The Underworld Painter, uses several lines, especially in the temple made for Atlas. The horizontal and vertical lines give the temple definite shape because of the thickness and they signify that a hero who has died, is the focal point on the back of the vase. The artist also uses curved lines at the top of the vase to show the richness of detail and drive the story further. The artist also uses the pointing hands of several figures to show a psychological point; Atlas on his throne and Selene driving her chariot.…
In contrasting pieces of art, it is important to first identify the time period that each work is from. In this essay the pieces of art that are being compared and contrasted are, “Kritios Boy,” from the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, and “Dying Gaul,” from Capitolini in Rome, Italy. Kritios Boy was created during the Early Classical style period (480- 323 BCE). The Early Classical style is often referred to as Severe or Transitional, as it was known to bridge the gap between the Archaic and Classical. There is controversy as to weather the Kritios Boy belongs to the late Archaic period or to the Early Classical period, however the Kritios Boy displays many Early Classical attributes that seem to confirm it as Early Classical.…
The Tomb of the Augurs (main & right wall, Monterozzi necropolis, Tarquinia 520 BCE) depicts an elaborate ritual ceremony in which funerary games took place in honor of the dead. The entirety of this tomb consists of four walls, however, the artist(s) is unknown. The city of Tarquinia is one of the most powerful and prominent Etruscan centers known for its many fresco painted chamber tombs.0 An augur is a roman priest, however the Etruscan augur is an official who closely watches the game taking place in order to enforce rules and act as a judge on matters arising from the games.0 On the main wall, two men extend one arm toward the door and place one hand against their forehead, their positions suggest salute and mourning. A large door is also…
Each component of the painting is essential in completing the visual narrative. Dominance is exhibited in the main figure of St. Clare. The full frontal stance is typical of Byzantine style art; however, what makes it dominant is the life like size of the portrait, Even though there is a lot going on in this picture, the central portrait seems to draw the attention of the viewer. Appropriate symmetry cannot be overlooked in this pictorial.…
One approach to dissecting the aforementioned questions is to use one societal model in order to question the social structures and norms that revolve around the community. In fact, this purpose can be magnified through the examination of ancient Greek and Roman art. Art is considered one constructive platform of communication for essentially all human beings; there are a multitude of cultural references that can be gathered from studying such art pieces in depth. Greek art is noted in that the use of specific symbols and stylizations all correlate to many common motifs and ideologies. Roman art, though similar, ties closer to politics than does…

Iconoclastic Controversy We today associate the term “Icon” with a lot of different objects and things in today’s time. The actual chess pieces were found, and there was quite a number of each figure and some were varied slightly, indicating different sets. The material that was used to create them was walrus ivory and whale tooth. These were rare materials and there was a need of a lot skilled craftsmen in metal tools to create them, they were expensive to produce, therefore. Within the first floor…
