PeopleSoft was created in 1987 by David Duffield and Ken Morris in Walnut Creek, California (cite). Similar to a customer relationship management (CRM) or an enterprise resource planning (ERP) product that organizes and streamlines an organization’s resources, PeopleSoft’s original product can be defined as a HRMS, or Human Resource Management System. PeopleSoft provided users with the service of an entire human resources function, essentially outsourcing a complete business system from hardware to software, data, and procedures—lacking only the “people” component, differentiating PeopleSoft from a complete business function. Its success allowed it to acquire many similar companies it considered rivals, like Vantive Corporation and JD Edwards, who had a similar product line which PeopleSoft used to release new applications in different types of corporate target markets. The company was eventually acquired by Oracle Corporation, another company specialized in enterprise software products, in 2005, though the packages originally developed by PeopleSoft have kept their “PeopleSoft name” and are marketed as such. Today, PeopleSoft represents one of the largest application packages that organizations can use for a variety of uses, including human capital management, financial management, supplier relationship management, enterprise services automation, supply chain management, peopletools, and much more. It has built-in features that allow users from all over the globe to use it due to constant policy updates these programs follow. This particular package has five different modules that each serve a purpose in organizing the HR function. The Global Core Human Capital Management modules has “country-specific capabilities with delivered local extensions as well as multi-national data formats, protected with embassy-grade data security” (cite). The PeopleSoft HCM 9.2 also has modules on workforce management to track labor schedules and absences, labor monitoring to increase workforce productivity while a service. The last module is on talent management which allows a company’s HR department to manage the processes of hiring and recruiting, training, evaluating, terminating, and much more
