Penny Persuasive Speech

The deal famous for its worth: “$0.99.” It’s a price that pulls you towards the item, but how often does someone pull out the actual $0.99 from their pockets? Not very often, and when that moment does occur, it’s not fun for anyone to watch the person fish out for those three quarters, two dimes, and four pennies. For those who pay with a dollar bill, they don’t get too excited to get a penny back. The penny has been around for many, many years. Kids collect them in jars, they float around in the couch, and on good days, someone finds a lucky penny on the ground. Have you ever stopped and thought: “Is a cent really worth that much?” No one really does. Pennies are a waste of space and worth. There’s no such item worth a penny at the store and people round up to the nearest dollar when they pay with cash anyways. The penny should be eliminated for these reasons. …show more content…
Then there’s people who round to the nearest dollar. There’s no harm there, but then the change comes back. Let’s say the change is worth $16.74. The cashier hands the change to the customer but all the coins fall on the floor. Now you have to wait for that person to pick up those two quarters, two dimes and four pennies. Now think of how much faster the picking up process would’ve been if the amount was rounded to $16.75. That’s only three quarters and not even three seconds worth to pick up. The time proficiency is a lot better compared to the amount before. As stated in “Penny Pinchers” by Ric Kahn (passage 2), “The National Association of Convenience Stores and Walgreens drug store chain estimated that handling pennies adds 2 to 2.5 seconds to each cash transaction.” If people rounded to the nearest cent, businesses could make more money and lines can go faster. It all adds up in the

In source 3 it states, “However, several economists have noted that rounded prices should not cost extra money and may even lead to lower prices.” This means that taking away the penny can lead to lower prices. This quote shows that we should get rid of the penny. In source 3 it states, “For example, something currently worth 99 cents may well drop to 95 cents instead of rising to a dollar to avoid the higher price threshold and attract more customers. Market forces should protect prices—and rounding would make it considerably easier to count change.”…

Things such as penny candy and penny arcades are far and few between in this day and age. Often, pennies spend their time taking up space in wallets, drawers, and on shelves. One eighth grader says, “If you asked for my quarters, I would have said ‘no’ because I use them for video games. Pennies don’t really matter much, so I was happy to give them…” (Source #3, Waterhouse).…

The penny creates an inconvenience for everyone as our monetary system focuses on its use even though its value is miniscule. That time spent looking for pennies in line at the grocery store could be spent on other thing instead of wasting everyone else's time. Also, the penny in itself is a waste of time as it is valued less than its material cost and much less than its labor cost. This means that as more pennies are produced the government will continuously lose money. In doing away with the penny, many of this nation’s economic problems might actually be…

Sommers writes, "A number of countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and Britain, have already dropped their lowest-denominated coins, without dire consequences." (Penny Wise, or 2.4 Cents Foolish). All of these countries have stopped their lowest denominated coin with anything really awful happening. The mint wanted to find cheaper ways to make the penny but maybe an easier way would just be to get rid of it. A lot of countries have already done it so why can't we do…

“The National Assembly of Convenience Stores and Walgreens drug store chain estimate that handling pennies add 2 to 2.5 seconds to each transaction… We can calculate that presence of pennies waste 20 seconds per day,” (source B). Granted, this does not sound like too much but that is four hours per person per year, costing employees $60, and the nation $15,000,000,000. If pennies were to be abolished, the US would see an increase in profit and productivity, thus a bump in GDP. But, time is wasted in the government as well as in transactions. David Early reported that, “The original penny legislation was introduced in the Senate by Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and in the House be Rep. Ray LaHood (R-IL), two of three co-chairs of the ALBC.…

Similarly, the penny’s lack of use ultimately makes it a burden when it comes to making purchases. While it may seem that 2 seconds are not a considerable amount of time, these additional seconds can add up to around 40 seconds a day, leading to a total of 4 hours wasted counting change per year [Source B]. With the elimination of pennies, America could reduce the amount of time people spend at the cash register, preventing long lines and upset customers. Furthermore, the 27% of people who do not keep track of their loose change will no longer have to find their coins in obscene places. Moreover, zinc and copper could be used for creating something worthwhile rather than being thrown into the trash by people who think pennies are “mucky and worthless” [Source B]. Altogether, the elimination of pennies would save cashiers and consumers time during transactions, and prevent the waste of materials such as zinc and copper.…

This organization believes that the penny should be kept because of its “high public acceptance and historical significance.” One piece of evidence they use to back up their claim states that “74 percent of Americans support keeping the penny in circulation.” This statement suggests that the majority of Americans are in favor of keeping the penny as the smallest form of currency but it fails to demonstrate any real change as far as circulation goes. I agree that what the penny represents is of great historical significance; however, studies have proven that Americans continue to pay little attention to the penny. Statistics from The Government Accountability Office show that “almost 66 percent of pennies did not circulate.”…

While it is true that we could save a lot of the time wasted on counting pennies, the effects of rounding taxes are worse than trying to save maybe a minute or two. Think about it, rounding taxes may seem easier and more time-efficient, but in the long run that amount eventually adds up. Something priced at $9.08 would round up to $9.10, costing you two cents more than the original price. Although two cents may not seem like a lot, after a year or even two years, those two cents rounded up keeps adding on and eventually takes quite the toll on your bank account. Like Mark Weller claims, “the rounding tax will cost consumers $600 million per year,” stated in source #2.…

The US uses 1.5 cents to make just one penny last year. That is .5 cents more than the price of the penny causing the US to lose millions each year. This fact leads to arguments on why the useless penny should be abolished. As a growing country, pennies represent the expanding nation for everyone to see. But, the country will not be able to grow any more if people lose millions each year from useless pieces of zinc.…

Within the past few years, its cost has fluctuated slightly, but has stayed around 1.6 cents. At such a low value to begin with, and costing more to make than its actual value, it is not worth the time, cost, nor the energy being used to produce the penny. While all of this energy and money is going into manufacturing these pennies, the mills could be much more efficient and mass-produce many other coins, more useful than the…
