What decides what art is? Over the years, there have been many discussions about what decides art and it is this question that many artists have toyed with. From the aesthetic appeal to statement works to the viewer's own perception, many aspects of art have been explored. However, the value of art is decided by that of the history of the artwork itself.…
After the film had aired, both Theo van Gogh and Hirsi Ali received thousands of death threats, which resulted in the murder of Theo Van Gogh and the seclusion of Hirsi Ali. According to some scholars, Theo van Gogh’s troubled history with the Muslim community justified the leaders blaming the film that for spreading Islam phobia. Theo van Gogh was a well-known Dutch filmmaker/author and is the great grand nephew of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh. Unfortunately, Theo van Gogh was not famous for his well written books or inspiring documentaries but rather for his controversial outspoken opinions on Muslims, Jews and Christians or as I say the “former Donald Trump” of his time.…

For this paper I will be answering the question, “how did the American Civil War effect Elizabeth Val Lew”. I have always had a strong interest in the Civil War. I am particularly interested in the Battle of Gettysburg and Michigan’s involvement in the war. Recently I have become interested in the role women had during the war as well. During the war many women enlisted in positions that were mainly set aside for men, for example nurses.…
The Holocaust has effected the Jews, such as Anne Frank and her family. The Franks had to share a room with the Van Daans. The two fathers act different towards other people defines their personality. While Mr. Frank and Mr. Van Daan have different personalities, they are similar in some ways. Mr. Frank is a nice and caring man.…
The extreme traits of Mrs. Van Daan. “I can’t stand it! I’ll kill myself! I’ll kill myself, “ she screams just as the play is about to end. Peter Van Inwagen’s whole concept of this article was to prove through various points and arguments the conflicts of evil. He brings arguments, and ideas that disagrees with the notion of even believing that evil exists. What he begins with is the problem with believing evil exists is; say evil exists through the many happenings you have witnessed or even only heard about, so how can it not be real right? Inwagen inserts the idea that God, almighty and creator of all, does not exist if large amounts of evil exist through is research from other readings about evil. The mere idea of god existing while evil does will reject the image that is there for God.…

The image I chose, titled Anxiety, was created by Benjamin Koelewijn. The picture shows a nude woman with a burning scalp covering her body in different ways. The flames are burning a cloth on her head, and the cloth shields her eyes. Her face is nearly void of expression, and is smeared with oil, along with her shoulders, arms, chest, and torso. Her right hand clenches her left shoulder, and a blanket is draped between her arms.…

Each of them have a specific role on what they achieve to the viewer.…
Once again we see the use of a vanitas. Like mentioned before with Jan Van Kessel’s vanitas painting, most artists had vanitas in their repertoire. Pieter Claesz shows us his version of a lamentation of the transience of all things in 1630. He has used the skull, showing the brevity of life and reminding us that soon we will all be the same. On the table he has placed an open pocket watch, much like Van Kessel with his use of the hourglass.…
Dear Rutledge, I know I’m only a teenager and teenagers aren’t usually associated with wisdom, but I’ve gone through a hand share of life lessons in my life. I’ve come to learn life isn’t about how many friends you have or how many people you know, but instead about how to fill your life with the characters that really matter. Emmy winning actor, Michael J. Fox once said “Family is not a important thing. Its everything.” My father intergrated that motto in my head since I was a toddler.…
During Van Gogh's last years in his life, he painted The Church at Auvers in 1890. Around that time, Vincent suffered from mental illness and some emotional difficulties. Just like his title, Van Gogh's subject is the Church at Auvers. Not only is the church the focal point of the painting, but a woman on the far bottom left walking towards the church looks as if she is somewhat important too. The Church of Auvers painting does not only represent a church and a safe haven to reside, but also captures Van Gogh interpretation of how much he is suffering.…
