Peggy Mcintosh White Privilege Essay

White privilege is term that was originated by a woman named Peggy Mcintosh. She is a American female who is a liberal feminist and anti racism activist. Mcintosh coined the term in her paper called “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack.” Peggy Mcintosh writes that white privilege is an unearned advantage that white people have in society. I believe white privilege is an excuse for “leftist” to give reason for why middle and upper class people have in the country. The argument for white privilege is America is a deeply racist country, infused with white skin privilege, and if you are not white you cannot overcome the racist system that the western society is found upon. There is no statistical evidence that white people have any more advantage in life than any other person does. People are in control of their own welfare and choices that they make throughout their life.
In the beginning of Mcintosh’s paper she states that “whites are carefully taught not to recognize white privilege…My schooling gave me no training in seeing myself as an oppressor, as an unfairly advantaged person.” These statements are moronic for multiple reasons.. Maybe

Most of these instances are a long stretch that make very little to no sense or logic. Some of these instances are almost understandable, yet the reason of them is by no means evidence of racism of western society. Many examples you may hear and read of white privilege, both in Mcintosh’s writing and others are “ white people can go shopping alone most of the time and will not be followed or harassed.” Weather or not you are followed in a store is entirely based on self representation. If someone is sagging their pants with large hoodies on and acting “gangster” regardless of their race, they will be watched and followed. If the same individual is wearing a formal suit and has an essence of class, they will not be

I agree with Johnson’s explanation because I believe white people are immune to a lot of challenges minorities are faced with. However, the term “White Privilege” is something that most Americans don’t believe is real, despite the large amount of evidence that proves otherwise. This is an advantage white people have without realizing it, until it is suddenly taken away. The evidence that shows the advantages that white people have over other colors is overwhelming, but every time the term “white privilege” is mentioned, there is an unavoidable…

According to Tim Wise, white privilege is being able to benefit just for your skin tone. Wise uses multiple examples of how being white is a privilege. For example, Tim Wise brings up the subject of drugs. He explains how many white people are actually more likely to be found with drugs, however many brown and black people are being pulled over instead. He discusses the subject of how if police were fighting against crime they would be more likely to pull over white people however they do not.…

The #6 white privilege on Mcintosh list states “When I am told about our national heritage or about "civilization," I am shown that people of my color made it what it is.” It must be gratifying to have knowledge of one’s heritage. To be individually honored for ancestry achievement is a privilege and it should be, however, with respect to other contributors that made such an achievement possible. Mcintosh mentions that the many contributors to what we refer to as a “civilization “ are not accounted for, as if others outside of the in-group are inconveniently placed as a burden. Depicting images of a dominant group member or a white person is to impose indirectly an idealistic perspective on the viewers that is impossible to attain.…

In today’s society, I perceive myself as white, male, heterosexual, able-bodied, upper-class, college-educated, and Jewish. That is a gift in today’s world. I am fortunate to come from a privilege background, but I recently started to have more sense of appreciation of my white privilege ever since I started to take a Gender, Race, and Class course. One of the readings that really caught my eye was “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” by Peggy Mcintosh, and in her article, she discusses how some people who have white privilege do not seem to recognize the privilege that they have. She gives numerous of examples on how white privilege helps in real life encounters.…

In the article “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” by Peggy McIntosh, there is the discussion of white privilege being some sort of invisible benefit that accompanies whites while they remain oblivious to it. McIntosh then goes into how she came about her stance of white privilege through her studies in male privilege over women. In this stance, McIntosh stated how men were unable to acknowledge the idea that they were privileged compared to women but were able to say that women were in a disadvantaged position. She connects this idea with her statement on white privilege by showing how the men’s denial was similar to the denial of whites and their state of privilege over the other races. McIntosh saw this disadvantaged state…

Peggy McIntosh, author of the essay "White Privilege", gave a compelling argument and interview on the situation of race and how it plays in society. She discussed how white people don't address their "whiteness", the 5 impediments of US ideology, and the disadvantages of being a race other than white. Her argument is quite compelling and interesting to listen to, however, she used logical fallacies, making her argument weak. First, she addresses how white people don't accept their "whiteness" and their race. We often say "I don't see color" or try to defend how they are not racist human beings by not accepting their white race.…

In the selected article, Campbell describes his reflection on times in his life where he was met with challenges due to his race. These challenges directly attacked his perceived way of life based off of assumptions as opposed to facts and evidence. As a white male, Campbell argues that he has had no racial privilege and more so that privilege is not attached to race but many other attributes. Campbell refuses to acknowledge “white privilege” and prefers to address emotional stereotypes that are taken as fact. By applying reason over emotion the reader is able to see that “white privilege” is accordingly just a privilege and not inherent of race.…

What exactly is white privilege, one might say? White privilege is knowing that one has unearned privilege but choose to ignore the meaning of it. " White Privilege Shapes the U.S" by Robert Jensen, first appeared in the Baltimore Sun on July 19, 1998. In this editorial, Jensen speaks about his personal experience on white privilege and how being white can give them more unearned privilege than those of other races. Furthermore, Jensen states that unearned white privilege was given rather than by working hard for it, but faces the choice on how they use it, and to admit they have benefitted from it.…

I have always viewed racism as people of other color being discriminated against. Most people view privilege as being a favored state, meaning that by birth or luck a person is at an advantage to another. McIntosh states that privilege can also be viewed as a state of dominance because of one’s race or sex. I disagree that privilege should be viewed as dominance because individuals who are privileged do not necessarily set out to intentionally control others. McIntosh discusses what can be done to bring an end to white and male privilege.…

All of these things listed are seen by whites as the “normal” things that are available to all in society, ignoring the fact that Blacks, Asians, Latinos, and other minorities do not have ready access to or enjoy these privileges. White privilege, expressed by McIntosh, is the ability to be surrounded by those of the same race, not being subject to constant surveillance in public, being included as a positive part of history, being able to conveniently shop for “American” foods and hygiene products, dropping in at any barber shop for a haircut and someone working there having the knowledge to perform the cut of my choice, and the list goes on and…

‘It’s often said that it is lonely at the top, but it’s also an anxious place to be, because you live in constant fear of falling’” (Blake 3). This man understands that whites have privileges, but then justifies their terrible actions by stating that they needed to do it to stay the majority. In the book The New Racism: Reverse Discrimination in America the author says “... it will be the black society that will acquire superior rights and benefits at his expense” (Lokos 388). This is another example of whites claiming that they are being oppressed because people of color are gaining power.…
