Constantly navigating cultural exchange, I understand student needs and challenges seeking jobs in America (e.g. communication barrier). Such first-hand insight and knowledge of student development are at the center of program development. For example, at Texas A&M University, I led International Student Workshops and increased student participation by 75%. These workshops aim to improve international student’s communication skills, but have been struggling with low student retention rate. I designed and conducted an online survey to identify student needs, and then I updated the curriculum to align with program goals and learning outcomes. With assessment tools, I was able to monitor program effectiveness and student learning. Student testimonials showed that participatory learning practice and informal assessments motivated students to devote more time in delivering effective communications. What strengths did you rely upon in your last position to make you successful in your work?* My communication and networking skills, multi-tasking skills and knowledge of marketing help me successfully recruited 332 students for the aforementioned workshop. First, I worked closely with staff and faculty member to develop course curriculum. Second, I liaised with other college departments (e.g. Career Center, Department of Student Activities, International Student Service) for workshop cross-promotion. Third, I established and maintained partnership with student organizations and local business to outreach the target audience. Fourth, I collaborated with the media team to generate marketing material for social media marketing (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Wechat and Weibo). Last but not least, I delivered engaging presentations and facilitated discussion during workshops. As workshop topics update every week, my ability to coordinate the five tasks above simultaneously help me reach the maximum audience. Describe a time when you performed a task outside your perceived responsibilities, including what the task was and how you perceived this to be outside your responsibilities. What was the outcome?* When I interned at the Department of Student Activities, Texas A&M University, my major duty was to design a leadership-training course for the Peer Leadership and Service Program. I also participated in individual and group meeting with students, shadowing advisory practices under my supervisor. After a few meetings, I found that program goals discussed during weekly meetings were just fantasies—they were seldom executed with actions. I reported this problem to my supervisor, and she invited me to solve the problem although it went beyond my responsibility. To improve program efficiency, I took the initiative to document meeting memorandums and establish actions plans, which included delegated tasks, person held accountable for the task and timeline. As a result, big goals was broken down into small action tasks and assigned to each individual, who were then motivated to finish the task and meet the deadlines. With clear action plans, me and my supervisor were able to monitor program progress and improve its efficiency. What experience have you had working with others with a different background than your own?* As the only international staff working at the University Writing Center, Texas A&M University, I worked with students and staff from diverse backgrounds (nationality, race, discipline, etc.) For example, I have consulted with an African American male student majored in Engineering, who was also a member of Corps of Cadets. Despite our different background, we worked collaboratively to revise his resume. During the
