What Is Pearl Harbor?
Jeanne watches Papa, Bill, and Woody leave on a boat. Before the boat gets very far it stops and all the ships turn back around to the harbor. Word gets out that Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Papa attempts to disassociate himself and the family from Japan by burning the Japanese flag and documents from Japan. Papa is arrested and integrated for being a spy. Allegations are made against Papa claiming that he supplied oil to a Japanese submarine.

There is a riot that takes place one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. In the past the mess hall bells signaled that they were unhappy with something. When this happened they were threatened with beatings and assassination. Some men attack a leader of the Japanese American Citizens League, three of them are caught and arrested. One of the men arrested is a cook which is why the riot breaks out. Papa thinks the riot is stupid and keeps the family in the barracks. When they go to high school their friendship changes, boy flirt with Jeanne but actually ask Radine to dance. Overall Radine is widely accepted while Jeanne is not. Jeanne becomes jealous of Radine because she seems them as two of the same people. Jeanne starts to dislike her Japanese face. Jeanne wants to drop out of high school. Papa drinks too much and relies he needs to stop, so he takes up farming. In Jeanne's senior year she starts at a new school. She is more accepted in this school. Papa gets angry when Jeanne wins carnival queen and how she uses her body to gets boys attention. Papa pushes Jeanne to more Japanese. Jeanne starts to question who she really is when she goes to the coronation ceremony.

Jeanne graduates from college and gets married to a non-Japanese man. The family almost never talks about to camps. Jeanne and her husband revisit Manzanar. Jeanne feels the presence of her mother who is now dead. Jeanne looks around and remembers all the things that happened there. Going to the camp helps Jeanne get over everything that happened there. She finally says goodbye to her
