Shadowing Ms. Jennifer Dreher, Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) and Patient Educator at Bethesda North Hospital, provided insight on her daily tasks and the profession. Ms. Dreher works in the Orthopedics department where she is actively involved in several meetings and performs coordination of care for numerous patients. She is also training Mrs. Laura Moffat, a floor nurse at the hospital studying to become a CNS. During my shadowing experience, I attended two meetings and accompanied Ms. Dreher on rounds to patient rooms.…
This summer I completed my field experience by shadowing a physician assistant named Adam Strantz. He works in a primary care office in Fremont, Michigan. The office, Spectrum Health Medical Group, was fairly small and included only two PAs and one physician. Before starting my shadowing, I set a few goals for myself to learn during my time there. Each and every one of my goals were met through my time there.…
Part Three: The Stealth Epidemic Part three movie indicated that thirty percent of the Americans (nearly 100 million) are the victims of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, asthma, and many others. Treatment of these chronic illnesses consumes more than 70 percent of all health care resources. Healthcare professionals are unable to prevent needless suffering, even death. In addition, the healthcare management system does not provide enough education and prevention for many affected people and funds for the uninsured are not enough. As a result, the failures are threatening the viability of American’s entire healthcare systems.…
Family Nurse Practitioner vs. Nurse Administrator There are many various roles within healthcare that one can choose as a career path. Many choose a route that directly impacts patient care via treatment care plans while others choose to collaborate with other disciplines through an indirect patient care profession that impacts and improves the patient’s overall care experience. Regardless of the route, the goals in healthcare are the same, to provide safety and the highest level of patient-centered quality care (American Organization of Nurse Executives [AONE], 2015, p. 3). Direct and indirect care roles are both beneficial and provide services to patients but do so in differing manners.…
Prior to matriculation to medical school, I will be working as a full time session assistant at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. As a session assistant, I am the liaison between the patient, family, and clinical teams during office visits. I am responsible for coordinating appropriate treatments and consultations in accordance with the physicians’ orders. I also manage patient flow by reviewing clinic templates. I will continue to learn about the medical and non-medical aspects that contribute to patient care, with hopes of positively impacting the patient experience.…
“Every single day you learn something new,” Nurse Medina says, “ and if you look at everything there is usually never a double moment.” Medina works in the Emergency Room (ER) at Lenox Hill Hospital where she experiences different situations that occur in the department. Nursing isn’t as simple as it sounds. Working twelve-hour shifts with different scenarios every day is arduous for the nurse practitioner that manages the ER. Working in the ER to save a life may sound a bit cliche, “But when you can really save a life that is worth saving what I mean of worth saving is that the person will have a good outcome.…
The language with which the healthcare workers use in their notes is one that takes an individual to decipher. As an intern at the Emergency Department of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, I got to witness many patients coming in with diverse needs and in turn observed the method of notetaking nurses that I had the opportunity to shadow use in recording the complaints of the patients. When I shadowed a nurse in the Emergency Critical Care Unit, she displayed the electronic medical records on the computer screen after visiting a patient's room. I observed her as she added more comments on the progress of the patient. While she was typing I made an effort to decipher what she meant by terms like I&D by recalling all the medical terms and abbreviations…
NURS 149 – Kaiser Permanente Puyallup Reflection Journal Charity Rominger Kaiser Permanente’s clinical rotation is like a peek behind the curtain – an opportunity to see the inner workings of a doctor’s office. From previous personal experience, I have only seen the hallway and specific assigned room after being called back for a doctor’s visit. It was intriguing to see the rest of the operations, various roles, and responsibilities.…
Directly observed, participated and managed hospitalized patients in ICU unit. Observed and supervised directly by Rahat Hussain MD, of Memorial Hermann Hospital (1028 bed hospital) in Houston, TX. Obtained direct clinical experience working within an advanced, U.S. hospital under expert supervision. I was responsible for my assigned patients, from whom I took histories, reviewed daily lab reports and overnight events and update their progress to Dr. Hussain during rounds. I attend clinics where I gather H&P and presents cases and discuss management plans.…
The day was spent shadowing the doctors and medical students in the pediatric emergency department. Last year, I recalled the first year SEP students observed the adult wing of the emergency department. The similarities between the two sets of populations were interesting. Both sets of patients included individuals with aliments suited for a visit with a primary care physician. This introduces a question about why the ED receives such a high quantity of these cases.…
In the film, five nurses share their real life scenarios within their nursing career. The nurses describe some challenging situations, which demonstrates that struggles come along the way of patient care. However, the film highlights the nurses’ incredible reliability to constantly provide medical assistance, despite the difficulties. Throughout the film, these nurses indicate a few important interventions that help to improve patient care. Since the film focused on different settings, each nurse focuses on a unique way for assisting his or her…

It is prominent in the healthcare setting to learn from the bad decisions or inaccuracies that occur through a wide variety of settings and cases that are presented to the hospitals for treatment. This learning process is an ever-going development where the challenges encountered are mere problems with needed solutions, and these solutions are sought after using data collected through evidence that remains prevalent then complied to derive a superlative solution. The process of nursing also poses challenges when patient care is examined. Patient care is a vital role within the nursing arena, and this role heeds significant attention to ensure errors do not occur. Metropolitan Hospital a large teaching hospital that has four main units working…
The term “paramedical” refers to occupations whose work is both organized around tasks of healing and ultimately controlled by the authority of physicians. Ultimate control by medical authority is manifested in a number of ways. First, much of the technical knowledge learned by paramedical workers during the course of their training and used during the course of their work tends to be discovered, enlarged upon, and approved by physicians. Second, the tasks performed by paramedical workers tend to assist, rather than directly replace, the focal tasks of diagnosis and treatment. Third, paramedical workers tend to be subordinate in that their work tends to be performed at the request or “order” of, and is often supervised by, physicians.…
