Patient Advocate First one must know what a patient advocate is and what their job role entails. Patient advocates help patients in various ways. They may ensure a patient sees the appropriate doctors; that treatment plans are being followed; and that the patient is taking advantage of all available treatment options. Advocates also coordinate care between doctors, if needed. (Health) For me the decision of becoming a patient advocate came to light when my husband was undergoing chemotherapy for the second time. If it was not for the patient advocate that was assigned to ICU at North Florida Regional during my husband’s last days, I would have been lost. Her awareness of the hospitals capabilities; …show more content…
There are several educational groups that will "certify" patient advocates who have graduated from their individual programs. However, each of these groups has different requirements for admission, each has a separate approach to educating health advocates, and because there is no universally agreed upon standard for certification, advocates earning the certifications assigned by these groups cannot be considered to have the same sets of skills, nor can we conclude anything about the quality of their capabilities. Growing up as a foster child and shuffled through foster homes I know what it is like to feel left out, unaware of what was going on and feeling defenseless. Throughout my adult life I have volunteered with many community center activities, 911 and transport services. While my daughter was in school I was her cheerleading coach as well as the southern regional director for an exchange student program. Our family and community were able to support foreign exchange students while helping them learn to adapt to our life style. I was their advocate and fought for them when needed whether it was with issues with their families here in the US or abroad, with the school system or even their own personal problems. Then when my husband was diagnosed with cancer and throughout his 4 year fight I learned to be his personal advocate. So I honestly believe I would do well in this field and would truly prosper while obtaining personal satisfaction in knowing I have made a difference in someone’s life! After all I have been through compensation is not a factor for me. A decent wage is
