An adverse life experience is a traumatic event that can have a long lasting negative effect. These experiences vary from a wide range of things like mental or physical impairment, to domestic violence, to the use of drugs or alcohol. Any of these can lead to becoming homeless due to their inability to work. The HOPE HOME Study: Pathways to Homelessness among Older Homeless Adults, is a lab report that was designed to collect and record the data on the population of the homeless. During their experiment, they selected 350 homeless people to be interviewed. They were all over the age of 50. The interview consisted of multiple questions that analyzed their current mental status. They asked the individuals to report their drug history and when they first became homeless. The people who became homeless before the age of 50 were more likely to report “adverse life experiences” such as mental disorders and substance abuse and usually were not married and did not obtain a full-time job. These people had a harder time trying to perform daily tasks. The people who became homeless after the age of 50, did not necessarily have adverse life experiences.
