Ethan, similar to Zeena, had lost his passion and hope for a better relationship after his mother passed away. Ethan expected Mattie to become yet another burden who he would have to handle. Ethan held faithful to his responsibility until Mattie introduced him to the life of passion, lust and reckless infatuation. The rekindling of passion was something that Zeena suspected, “ It was a fact that since Mattie Silver’s coming he had taken to shaving every day; but his wife always seemed to be asleep when he left her side in the winter darkness, and he had stupidly assumed that she would not notice any change in his appearance. Once or twice in the past he had been faintly disquieted by Zenobia’s way of letting things happen without seeming to remark them, and then, weeks afterward, in a casual phrase, revealing that she had all along taken her notes and drawn her inferences” (Wharton Chapter 1). When Mattie arrived, Ethan discovered that she was a vibrant young woman with a promising spirit. Ethan decided that his entire life and shattered marriage was worth the sacrifice of having a chance to pursue Mattie. Ethan had a responsibility to care for his sickly wife but also uphold his vows with his wife. Once Ethan met Mattie, he had an inner debacle for a short time until he had decided that his life with Zeena was something …show more content…
Mattie was a young girl who brought light, passion and vibrancy into the Frome home. Those three attributes had never truly entered the Frome household due to the loveless relationship between Ethan and Zeena. Mattie represents the young Zeena and the intentions she had when she first married Ethan. Mattie held Ethan’s interest because he was everything he expected Zeena to be but she never lived up to. Zeena was a woman who never added the love and passion into her marriage due to her illness but Mattie brought that to Ethan in a fresh young way. That made Ethan pursue the relationship he longed for with Zeena and disregard the responsibilities he had. Zeena felt jealous of Mattie because she held all of the things she had lost over the years and held the attention of her prized possession whom was Ethan. Also, Mattie had the ability to cook, clean and care for herself and Ethan in the way that Zeena had the responsibility as a wife to do. That is where the burning rage and jealousy developed towards Mattie because she reminded Zeena of the responsibilities she had disregarded. Mattie gave them a reminder of their responsibilities and it was their choices to recognize them or

Mia Pollini AP 11 Literature Scene Analysis: Ethan Frome In Edith Wharton’s novella Ethan Frome, certain elements from Chapter 5, where Ethan and young Mattie spend a romantic night alone at home in Ethan’s wife’s absence, emphasize the theme of desire versus morality. These elements, such as the domestic setting where the two face the conflict of whether Ethan will act on his affectionate feelings towards Mattie so the two can be together despite both society and Ethan’s strict sense of morals highlight the idea that being ethical is more important than personal wants. For example, as they sit in “the lamplit room with its… implications of conformity and order” Ethan feels that Mattie is “farther…and unapproachable” compared to when they’d…

Ethan Frome takes place in a small town in Massachusetts called Starkfield where he has a wife named Zeena but their marriage is falling apart and he is wanting to get out of the marriage but his wife Zeena isn’t quite letting the marriage end just yet, but when a new housekeeper named Mattie comes to take care of the house Ethan begins to fall for her. I believe that Ethan Frome is naturalism because I feel like there was more things showing that choices didn’t matter like when Zeena hired a new housekeeper and forced Mattie out of the house where she had nowhere to go. I think it also naturalism because Ethan and Mattie had to find an alternative ways to still try to see each other after Mattie has to move away. I also believe that Ethan Frome is naturalism because Ethan has to hurry home from work one night to get glue to try and fix the red pickle dish that the cat had knocked over and that had broke when it fell and hit the floor. It shows naturalism because Ethan had to try to fix it so Zeena didn’t come home and see it and freak out more then she would’ve when she saw it trying to be fixed by gluing it back together.…

Until then, she had been hesitant and unsure of what to do. The building of tension in their relationship occurs progressively throughout the book until the very end. In literature, romance is often used so that a character is destined to find their romantic partner. Such a finding may occur early on or later in a character’s journey, but clearly Edith Wharton has decided in Ethan Frome to tell the story with a stress on Mattie finding out about herself in order to create tension and to bring about a climactic plot, with herself ultimately falling in love with Ethan…

Mattie thinks through problems and doesn't ignore them now. For example, Mattie wanted to go the market when sickness was all about in the first few chapters of the book. Many chapters later, Mattie becomes more careful and cautious. The author shows this on page 185, “They would never comb her hair or tell her stories.” This shows that Mattie was cautious because when she about to return Nell she saw that the orphan house was too crowded and they wouldn't treat her well.…

When his mother became ill, the house became lonely and silent; only when Zeena arrived did Ethan restore his balance, describing Zeena as “smart” and “efficient”, words he would later regret (Wharton 61). Following his mother’s unfortunate death, left with only Zeena, Ethan asked her to stay with him, simply to avoid loneliness; the irony here is that, within one year, Zeena became sickly and silent, just like his mother! The love between Ethan and Mattie itself was unsuccessful, never meant to happen. When Ruth and Ned had kissed under the spruces, they had done so legitimately, since they were an engaged couple (even though they were…

Everyone at some point of their lives has gone through situations where they find themselves continuously keeping certain things like: thoughts, their own needs, or even happiness in complete confinement. This is either for the sake of their own morals, selflessness for others own needs, or even just out of fear from what they want or desire being wrong. Edith Wharton once said, “The worst of doing one 's duty was that it apparently unfitted one for doing anything else,” which means that doing something or a task for someone else might cause the other person from doing what they truly want. In the story of Ethan Frome, the author Edith Wharton, tells the story of Ethan who falls in love with his wife’s cousin, Mattie, but he’s ultimately stuck…

Wharton succeeds in making the American Dream an important theme within Ethan Frome because the continuous decay of Ethan’s dream further romanticizes and idealizes the goal of accomplishing it. Throughout the entire novel, Ethan is so close, yet so far away from achieving the perfection of his hopes and dreams. Even in older age, Ethan remains at his house with both Zeena and Mattie, who is now sick, and thus spends his days in the presence of a living representation of his failed American…
