Parkinson Deep Brain Surgery

After dealing with this condition for several years now, I guess I forget that not everyone knows what it is. It's not cancer. Parkinson’s is a degenerative neurological disorder that destroys the the dopamine producing neurons in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that important in controlling and coordinating movement and without it movement becomes slow and less fluid. It’s most prevalent among people over age 60. It breaks down like this: 1 million people are currently diagnosed in the U.S. and 7 million worldwide. Of the 1 million diagnosed cases in the U.S., only about 4% occur before the age of 60. Michael J. Fox, Muhammad Ali, and Linda Ronstadt are several notable names who were diagnosed with Parkinson’s. There is no cure, …show more content…
So it’s seems crazy that this has happened, but it has. Anyway, the next step is to have brain surgery. Deep Brain Stimulation is a procedure that should help reduce my tremors. The tremors are one of the major symptoms associated with this disease. They slow everything down and make certain activities very difficult. They make it difficult to type (which makes it hard to send a quick response to your emails), and they make it extremely difficult to work and go back to school. So it is my hope that after the surgery that many things will return to as they were before my diagnosis.

I must admit that I am a little surprised that someone from America’s heartland supports a socialist. I imagine you must steer clear of conversations on politics. Well, back to Bernie though. I’m amazed that he did as well as he did. It really reminded me of the 2000 election between George W. Bush and Al Gore. Ralph Nader ran as a third party candidate and took a lot of the votes that probably would have gone to Gore. The election was incredibly close and the final result could have been different if Nader had not ran. This was different because Bernie ran as a Democrat.
