Infant temperament will be assessed by an adaptation of the Infant Behavior Record (IBR; Bayley, 1969; Stifter et al, 2008). The IBR will be completed by two experimenters after completion of the laboratory visit based on infant temperament displayed throughout the entire visit. The IBR consists of nine questions pertaining to infant openness, responsiveness towards parents and strangers, and response to stimuli from the visit. Parent Affect. Parent affect (facial expression) will be rated by trained and reliable coders during the SFP play and play resume periods, second-by-second, on a scale ranging from -3, meaning very negative, to 3, denoting very positive. The coding scheme that has been used to rate infant affect (Braungart-Rieker et al., 1999) was modified for rating adult (parent) affect.
In order to become reliable, research assistants much achieve an inter-rater reliability (ICC) ≥ .80. Drift reliability of 25% overlap will be assessed by interclass …show more content…
The same size is also small, with only 50 families. Additionally, this study looks at only one-time point. The methodology also lacks due to laboratory visits occurring during multiple times of day, which could be a potential confound. Different times of year is also a potential confound, for the lab temperature varies based on external temperature and is not held constant. Future studies could expand the current research by examining the variables
